New home - need advice on some smaller flowering trees
Comments (11)Thank you for all of the suggestions. So far for fall delivery I have ordered the following - Magnolia 'Butterflies' Magnolia 'Genie' Magnolia 'Vulcan' Chrysanthemifolia Star Magnolia Chionanthus virginicus Cercis canadensis 'The Rising Sun' Cercis canadensis 'Appalachian Red' Cercis canadensis 'Burgundy Hearts' Cornus kousa 'Blue Shadow' Cornus kousa 'Akatsuki' Syringa reticulate Fagus sylvatica âÂÂRoseo Marginataâ (tricolor beech) Kwanzan flowering cherry Weeping Double Red Flowering Peach Acer palmatum 'Coral Pink' Acer palmatum 'Oregon Sunset' Ginkgo biloba 'Mariken' (a male) Definitely excited! Still keeping an eye out for things that peek my interest. If any of the good mail order nurseries do end of season sales or anything, I would love to know about them! I am also still debating the purple cherry I asked about as I ordered the rosebud Burgundy Hearts which is the color and size I was looking for. Thank you for the suggestions! Also, everything above is mail order and smaller than what I see at nurseries (on purpose for saving reasons). Being in zone 6b and with the property having a windbreak all around, should I be doing anything special for these trees for the winter? I will be planting in October. I have planted shrubs and perennials at that time and been fine through the winter but don't have any experience with trees. Thank you again for all of the help!...See MoreNeed help in house plan search!
Comments (2)Seabright- Congrats on your land. We just got some Nebraska land too! While I am planning a full basement, I am looking at similar or slightly less square footage in a 1 1/2 story also. I think that there are quite a few plans that you can maybe at least modify to meet your requirements? Did you like what your designer came up with? Is it possible to have him change things around to a smaller sq footage? Maybe take your other plan and note rooms that are too large or not needed?...See MoreCross Country Home Search
Comments (12)We moved from California to the Philadelphia area last spring. We put our furniture into PODS for storage and later moving, and drove cross county with a dog and a mini-van stuffed with essentials. The area we were looking at needed to be close to where my son lives, so he got a PO box for us, so I could forward mail. We took a by-the-month furnished apartment and started looking for houses when we arrived. The complex specialized in corporate short-term clients, it was lovely. Rent for a 1 bedroom was $3000 and included everything from cable and wifi to housekeeping services. Then we started looking for houses. We were fortunate to find something quickly and get an accepted offer. In our case, the house was nice, but we'd have preferred a single-level, which is quite uncommon in this area. More than the house, we have a fantastic yard, a quiet street, great location, and are 2 miles from our son and his family. And incredible neighbors bringing gifts of cases of beer, cakes and dog treats as we were moving in. We had the PODS delivered two days after we took possession and hired a local moving company to unload. (We were professionally loaded back in CA, too.)...See MoreWide angle lens = home disappoints?
Comments (21)Here's a fun study in contrasts. 1st pic is of our kitchen, just before finishing. Wide aisles, at 48". Incredible, kitchen "quadrangle" for cooks. Taken by either me or my contractor. 2nd pic is of the whole room, from the kitchen, by a pro- wide lens, again pre-fnish- built in floating media cabinet on the TV wall, shelves on niches not yet added. Look how cavernous the 2nd pic looks. Looks like 7' between the main sink to the left (not visible in the photo, and the island. Lol. Also makes the cabinets appear reddish, when they aren't. I'm not sure that's good marketing, as it gives a false impression of the home- could turn some people off, or could lead to unrealistic expectations, even when they "know" the total square footage....See MoreRelated Professionals
