Can I Air-Layer this Oak Offshoot

I have this Oak (I believe a Live Oak) in my front yard. After cleaning its roots (they were buried in thick dirt by the previous home owner) and covered them with mini pine nuggets, it started growing offshoots from the roots.

This is almost 3 feet tall now, and I'm wondering if I can air layer it (since I want to get an oak on my back yard.

You could try. Lack of answers likely indicate nobody has a clue. As far as "air layer', I would likely just take a good sharp spade and cut it lose from mother. Why go through additional trouble of air layering? I may not be understanding your question.

I would suggest you leave the plant(s) as is do not remove BUT do keep the soil around the plant DAMP not wet. this will prevent the roots (but not the soil) from freesing

beaner, I know you have this obsession with that volunteer callery pear seedling growing on the roadside. Fuzzy photos, but I'm suspecting that stuff is callus material/root primordia... doubt they'll root now... I'd have left 'em alone for at least 3 months, or until I could tell they had roots, before I cut them off. Read up on t-budding... you can t-bud from the object of your obsession onto a suitable rootstock (another pear),probably as early as late June.

Early spring is the best time to start doing your air layering. You can also observe deciduous trees to see when their buds become green. That would be the best time to start.

I agree. I would leave it severed in the ground until spring and move it then if it looks viable.
