What is the size of those leaves?

Apparently it is Rhododendron austrinum, aka Wild Azalea or Bush Honeysuckle

When I looked up R austrinum up Plant.gov has it as a southern gulf coast plant, as in Mississippi Alabama, Georgia and florida plant,....far from maine . Was this in the wild or in a garden? I can not be of help except to question.

In the wild. Now the guy who told me said I misheard and that he said it was Rhododendron schlippenbachii (Royal Azalea), which also isn't native to Maine. I have no idea. I lost interest. lol

One could do the search by finding a list of Rhododendrons that are native to the area LBJ Wildflower data bank has some search features that might help. My cousin who lives up there is always giving me mis ID's and I then go online and correct him. I don't think he is amused.

Here is LBJ DATABASE RHODODENDRON LINK. I have made a cursory perusal because I am into major procrastination today and minding other people's business and not my own. ( I have been working too much and am having my first day off in awhile). R. canadense, R. lapponicum var lappanicum, R. periclymenoides, R. prinophyllum, R.viscosum are some that list Maine as home. I find that is one goes to the individual pages, One can click on the USA symbol and it will take you to a range map. Slide the slider up 2 notches and it will give you counties where it is at. Some of them are not that detailed and just have Maine as a light green. Oh Well. LBJ. is not a totally complete list but it is a great jumping off point. Also , at the bottom under additional resources they have a look up on google link.

Sorry but the leaves do not match anything in the Rhododendron genera!! The venation is completely off. I have no idea what may grow wild in Maine, but whatever this is, I seriously doubt it is any kind of rhododendron or azalea.

It doesn't quite look like a native magnolia either...but I could be wrong there.

Right GG-I never thought Rhododendron here! But that said, I have no idea. Palmate reminds of Aesculus of course, but this ain't that.

Looks a lot like Ohio Buckeye to me.

Dandy, buckeye-like all Aesculus-has a palmate, five-parted leaf. Not at all what we're shown here.

We still haven't been told what size those leaves are.
