A waste of money
Comments (12)I have 2 of the smaller two shelf ones and this one. I use them as shelves on the porch for clustering smaller potted plants- I like to start plants and there are always some that fit on the shelves. The 2 shelf was a gift from someone who also didn't want to use it as a greenhouse. The smaller ones are about 4 years old - I've even picked up good for plastic paint so I could paint them easily all set up. I used the cover for a bit on the big one (1/2 a season) but it gets so hot here, I took it off by May that year. I recall your blog saying yours blew over - mine are against the house on the porch, so they don't move at all. Here is a link that might be useful: mists and enchantments my blog...See MoreIs this a smart upgrade or waste of money?
Comments (17)Not sure why but I feel like I should defend our desire to move now. Our house is just under 2500 sq ft, which I'm sure is fine for some families, but the layout of our home is just not good--a lot of wasted space. My 2 daughters are constantly fighting over their shared bathroom which is literally the size of a closet--you open the door and it almost touches the single sink vanity. There is literally about 20-25 sq ft in there, and that's counting the tub. We live on a main road with a sloped driveway and my youngest, 7, has just started basketball and really wants a basketball hoop on our driveway, which we can't give her because of the slope and traffic. We don't have big parties because the family room is quite small. I want a kitchen large enough for an island. We chose cheaper finishes when we built as a young couple just starting out with our first child. We have been slowly upgrading, but I know that we have already maxed out the value of our home. When I said we will gain a little more space, I meant about 750 more sq ft, which would actually make a significant difference in a house that is layed out better. It won't be our dream home, though. Things never go according to plan--if they had, we'd have built our dream home last year. But in order to make things at least somewhat better, and by that I mean a big bathroom for the girls, a house on a low-traffic street with the basketball hoop my daughter is dying for, and some upgrades for me so I don't always feel like I have an upgrading project going on, then we will consider an in-between move. I don't mind "all the hard work and disruption and expense" but I should have stated more specifically that I would like to have better quality finishes, not just "newer" finishes. I have put plenty of newer finishes in this house, but it just is not the place my family wants to stay long term for all of the reasons I mentioned. I appreciate everyone's advice and opinions. I hope I didn't sound too defensive :)...See MoreGrrrrr….. I HATE wasting money
Comments (12)I've done that too. Seems like every day I am looking for something. I like to go to stores where I can check my own groceries because I know exactly what bag everything is in. I check and bag "like" items. However, I lost a jar of Claussen dills the other day. I gave up and bought another jar....and as soon as I did, I found them. Last night I lost the baby bottle that I am using to raise some kittens. I panicked because I just knew I was going to have to drive the 40 miles round trip back to town to try and find another one. I thought I had put it in the fridge but I had set it in here on my computer desk and it got knocked on the floor. So, with a wash and some fresh formula, it was okay....but today I am going to buy a spare bottle when I go to town so I won't have to worry if I set this one aside (absentmindedly) and one of the pups get it and chew it up....See MoreCentral Vacuum - worth it or waste of money?
Comments (62)So I realize I’m late to the party, but thought I’d add that I absolutely love our central vac with hide-a-hose, and wouldn’t build a house without one in the future. There are a few major pros to this system Far more powerful than any other vacuum you can buy. The motor is stationary, so can be significantly larger than anything you would be able to carry around with you. The power of anything else, including Kirby, Miele, or Dyson, just is not comparable. Much quieter than a regular vacuum. The motor is located on the far side of my 3-car garage, so you can’t hear it inside at all. All you hear when it’s turned on is the sound of the suction from the hose. Can definitely vacuum while someone is sleeping, and it doesn’t bother the dogs. Best option for air quality. My system vents outside, so absolutely nothing comes back into the house. HEPA filters may be fine for some people, but they’re certainly not 100%. Super convenient! I wouldn’t want a system with a hose you need to lug around the house; but hide a hose is awesome. We have a nearly 4000 sq ft house, and 3 hoses (50’ long) cover it all (we have a 4th hose in the garage). Although the hoses are very long, they’re not difficult to deal with because you only pull out the amount you need, and you can just suck it back up into the wall as you go. Sucking 50’ of hose back into the wall takes probably less than 10 seconds. You can install those floor board dust catcher things if you want, but they’re unnecessary with a hide a hose. In the time it takes to get out a broom, you can pull the hose out of the wall and suck any little mess up. And a vacuum is always going to clean better than a broom! We have one of the hoses between the kitchen and laundry room, so it’s great for cleaning up both quick messes in the kitchen, as well as the lint trap in the laundry room. We clean more now because it’s just so easy to use! Used to have to get the vacuum out, lug it around to wherever the mess was, plug it in, then wrap the plug back up (maybe the most annoying part) and then put it away again. Now we just pull it out of the wall at the closest hose location, suck the dirt up, and suck the hose back into the wall. The dust bin only needs to be emptied every few months. Cons - only one I can think of is the price. It’s going to cost more than even the best vacuums, but totally worth it. If you’re building a new house, it’s worked into the mortgage so really doesn’t cost much of anything....See MoreDanielle Crowley
