Good guys or bad guys?
Comments (10)If you have been paying any attension in previous years and not noticed these guys before, then you may not have much of a problem. Here in North Carolina, we get them by the hundreds a day for a couple of months. If you really have very few, then individual squishing etc may be of significent value. No one has yet mentioned the critical points about conveniently killing the beetles. Their defence mechanism unless it is in the heat of the day (when they just fly away) is to tumble off of the leaf (or down out of the flower) that they are on. Therefore, you add a couple inches of water to a pot; add a few drops of detergent and stir (no foam); then while holding the pot under the leaves, place your other hand just above the beetles; just the shadow may make them tumble or you may tap or brush the leaves and they will fall into the soapy water and drown in a few minutes. The soap is added to decrease the surface tension so they can't float as well....See MoreFrog: good guy or bad guy?
Comments (14)Hi, laurelL's froggie is a good guy, but yacheryl, I'm sorry to say yours looks like a Cuban Tree Frog--he's got really big toe pad/suction cup thingies, and CTF's are kind of a ghostly grey. We've got one in our screen room that has grown to over 2" across, not counting legs. It rests on our ladder (I don't know why the ladder is in the screen room) during the day. The frog almost looks like a big lump of shiny silly putty on the side of the ladder, only not quite as pink as silly putty. I haven't seen any other kinds of frogs inside the screen room this year (we've had the little green ones, and a bigger barking tree frog before)and even the brown anole population seems down inside the screen room. I have trouble killing vertebrates but you're really supposed to catch and euthanize Cuban Tree Frogs (as well as brown anoles, I think). You can find directions on-line, I think IFAS (Florida extension?) tells you how....See MoreI sure hope he's a good guy
Comments (20)I became more reconciled (don't like doing it, but follow the recommended method) about killing the marine toad after hitting this U of FL site which states they're omniverous and (like CTF) eat small toads, frogs, lizards, small mammals and snakes, over and above having the ability to kill curious dogs and cats. The one good thing about Marine Toads is that I truly suspect they kill small CTF's, but if they're equally destructive to natives that eliminates their one possible attribute. The Marine Toad that nailed my dog (who survived) was a small one who had made it onto our screened back porch. I haven't killed any small toads, initially because they were too darned fast, then because Marcia alerted me to making really sure I didn't kill a native bufo toad. Once the Marine Toad is more mature, there is no mistaking the huge ugly glands that secrete poison that run down their sides, originating at "cheek" level. I don't see that gland on your "cute guys" Anna. By the way, for pet lovers: our local vets do not recommend treating exposure the same way that the U FL website does (hose their mouth while keeping the pet's head down). Locals suggest wetting towels and swabbing the foam continuously so that your beloved 4 legged friend doesn't injest any of the poison. It worked for us. Hope you never have to experience it: it is positively frightful. Marilyn Here is a link that might be useful: Marine Toad Info...See Moregood guys or bad guys?
Comments (1)My eyes definitely aren't as good as they used to be but I think they may be assassin bugs - a predatory insect that eats other insects both good and bad. Check out the link and see if its the same. Here is a link that might be useful: Assassin Bugs...See MoreAlana8aSC
