Is there a fairly affordable, natural / non toxic make-up line?

I have found some good products at Trader Joes for soaps and lotions, but I don't know much about make-up. I use a Loreal foundation every day, but I don't know what it contains and I'm a bit concerned about possibly putting talcum and other toxins on my skin on a daily basis.

First of all I don't know what to avoid, but also I'd like advice on what line would be a good choice regarding being fairly clean but also somewhat affordable. Any ideas? It doesn't have to be the purest ever, but definitely void of the harshest stuff.

You will never know what makeup contains since manufacturers do not put ingredients on the label. Safest is no makeup. But if you are employed unless you have perfect skin that appears to have been made-up you probably need to wear it. Appearance can be as important as being good at your job. Sad but true. You may want to try some of the tinted moisturizers rather than makeup.

Each skin and body chemistry is different. What works for one person will not work for another. You will need to try different ones to find what is best for you. Not just sample on the back of the hand. The oils in the skin can cause the color or texture to change. For daytime start with the lightest texture unless you have scars or other things to cover. Be aware that you will probably need two shades of makeup. One for summer and another for winter when your skin has lost it's color. If you go for the mineral powders, which are interesting and can be blended to reach a color you like on your skin. Remember to spray your face with distilled water to set the makeup.

When I was younger I wanted to be a model. Alas Mother Nature decided I would only be 5 foot. I still love makeup but seldom wear it.

I have good luck with Almay & Physician's Formula as I have problems with some makeups, Used to peel my lip skin right off about 5 minutes after I put it on in HS Maybelline mascara was great for yrs until my right eye got allergic to it (yes I went & showed the dr. what happened & he hadn't seen that before. So I stick with hypoallergenic stuff. Use Covermark burn makeup to even up my skin as migraines have taken a toll around my eyes. Cover it with Almay dusting powder so it doesn't rub off & then apply lipstick & little mascara & bit of shadow.

My elm has been a stump about 2 1/2 years. I covered it with plastic, and loaded woodchips on top. After about a year, I removed the black plastic. Since then, a lot of the neighboring groundcover myoporum grew over it. This summer an elm sprout emerged, so I recovered it with a lot more woodchips. After the resprout and the dry summer, the myoporum started to look really bad, it just couldn't compete with the other( close by & alive ) elm tree's roots. So I added even more wood chips and some horse manure, in a similar mad scientist, or just experimental fashion, as mentioned by border barb. Now I planted succulents on top of it and added some rocks to make it look like a more naturalistic raised bed.

It will look a bit deadish if you reach in a cut a few branches right back to the main trunk, but if you shake out/trim off the dead twigs and needles in there it will look airier and you will see the structure along the lines of the big tree. Start at the back of your shrubs and see if the effect is what you like. Once you have some light and space in the thing, you should be prepared to see more trunk and stems, since each branch is not all lined with fresh needles in there. Jaro is right that what you are likely to see is that each branch will in turn branch several times, and that is what makes them dense. To get the look you want (or think you want :-)) you basically need to correct that excessive branching and restore the single main branch to a semblance of straightness with no offshoots. It's not easy and it might not in fact look that great as the branches will be crooked at best. It's a risk, if you value fitting in with the neighbours. I have an unpruned Hicks yew that is about 10 years old and it mostly has long, unbranched but fairly upright branches. But the branches get bare with age, whether they are inside a meatball or exposed. I wonder if you should instead think about keeping them sheared but in a different shape; a plinth or a chess piece or something. (OK that might be a little advanced). But get yourself a book on topiary and see what the practice looks like when taken to the level of art. I actually really like it, but rarely have the heart to snip a branch. I also really enjoy the shapes that people come up with who have the space for them; we don't just have meatballs around here but all sorts of swoopy mushrooms and whoopee cushions and such. One thing you should know is that yews are very forgiving. If you decide you hate the result of your pruning, just cut back the branch in question again and it should resprout in the following year. Over the years I have had many different insecticides. The vast majority of them have been tossed; while I have used just a tiny tiny fraction of the material treating plants. So, I am cautious and careful. To get rid of the backlog of dangerous and outdated items I filled two black plastic trashbags and hauled them up to the hazardous waste facility. I had to make an appointment and everything; but the disposal was free (thank you, current state law and San Mateo County). I felt really good after I had gotten rid of all those old toxic items; but, still needed something for each of my potential pests. My theory is that I need an appropriate treatment for each of the bugs that I am likely to get. Nothing works on everything anymore--the good old days of mega-powerful, mega-toxic treatments is long gone. So, for all those typical sucking insects I have Marathon. For insidious mites I have Avid. The hole in this theory then would be........(everyone, come on, in unison:)......thrips! I have heard great things about Conserve. But, before I heard about that one, I bought Knox-out, which was being discontinued. I had floral thrips on my outdoor growing streps last summer, and cleaned them up after two sprayings. Another reason for getting the Knox-out was that I have a couple of scale like infestations on some of my greenhouse plants and outdoors on my cacti. The inside pest is a dry white scale that gets onto orchids and bromeliads. Outside, the pest is a cactus spine scale (or mealie), that overwinters by making an unsightly white thingie on the spines. This spray, because it has residual action works to rid this pest. Since orchids are growing in bark, it would be difficult to get the Marathon into them. With the cactus the scale is on the spines, so I'm not sure how well Marathon would work on them though I am guessing that they have a more active phase when they are on the plant body, but I can't see them. I just remembered a fourth class of pests--catapillers and cabbage moth larvae, which eat holes in foliage and eat out the insides of flower buds before they open. For them, I use the bacillis spray (formerly sold as Di-pel). I guess I really don't deal with many fungal problems though--but I use Lysol on mildew. I think that covers just about everything.

sink without window? Crazy or fairly common? Inspiration pictures??

I always thought the sink was traditionally under a window because of upper cabinets. When at the sink, you don't want cabinets in your face. And, unless you put glass behind the cabinet, one cannot/should not, exist over a window. So, if a kitchen can have a window, the logical place to put a sink is where a cabinet cannot exist. Our kitchen design includes a stages 45 in an island and a clean-up sink along a wall without a window. The kitchen is in the interior of the house, with an island that overlooks a breakfast bay with lots of windows and doors to the back yard. Good luck with your planning. We are not done yet, but below is a photo of the wall sink area. The base cabinet is 27 inches deep and the counter will be 3/4 inch overhang, so 27.75 inch counter space. The sink base is 36 inches wide. The shelving above starts at 34 inches above the counter and is 18 inches high. The uppers right and left of the sink are 16 inches deep. The shelves are pushed back 3 inches, so 13 inches to the wall. The width of the shelving area is 54. The space somewhat mirrors the adjoining wall with a 54 inch range hood set 34 inches from the counter and 18 inches high. ETA -- I would not want a corner sink. I am short and I think the empty space in the corner would frustrate me. However, I have used corner ranges and actually liked having the counters right and left at an angle, but only for a 1 cook kitchen.

Instead of lotion you can use jojoba oil. I've gotten my family hooked on the stuff. It's very similar to the skins natural oils. I used to have pretty bad acne even up to a few years ago and after changing my soap, moisturizer and make up my skin hardly breaks out anymore. I use goat milk soap from goatmilkstuff.com. I buy my makeup and jojoba oil on Etsy. On Etsy you have a bunch of homemade options so you can ask the seller what they put in their makeup. Some of them will even do custom orders to match your shade. And from what I've seen most are very affordable. Good luck! :)

I've been using Paula's Choice for a while, and my skin has improved a lot -- brown stops even went away.

Is there a fairly affordable, natural / non toxic make-up line?
