Viscose rugs - experience with them?

I'm rather smitten with a line of viscose rugs at my local Home Goods. They are about 8x12 and $300. I need a replacement rug but it will be somewhat of a placeholder. I can place it in either a low-traffic area or my family room (high traffic).

Any experiences with viscose rugs and their durability/wearability?

I don't have any personal experience but I understand they're less durable than polypropylene.

Call your state's consumer division of the AG's office and get the law on this, i.e.: internet/interstate commerce. Then email the rug company and tell them you have contacted the AG's office and will be moving forward with a small claims claim against them, along with bad reviews on the Internet, unless they come and get the rug and refund your money pronto! I even managed to get a brand new mattress returned to scuzzy Sleepy's by going this route. And get on the back of your credit card company to communicate with you about what is going on as well.

I have found that they fit nicely together. They are new Persian rugs that have simple designs on them. On Ebay they are cheap as compared to other web sites. Say 4x6 feet is about $400 but on other online sites they are $1,500. Anyone else buy them?

My padding was very pricey but it didn’t have a name brand. Was sold by the foot by my rug importer. I also have cheapies for rugs by the bed. The pricey ones feel more comfortable (spongy). Neither has stuck to wood or tile flooring but the cheapies do get brittle so after a while they are as slippery as if you had no padding. I think it’s money well spent to by the pricier ones but again, no damage to flooring with either. Curiously the spongy shelf lining that looks similar to rug padding has been a DISASTER. Over time it sticks to shelving and it’s a mess to remove. Walmart stuff. Won’t use that again!

I love love love RH - I have tons of things from them and think their quality is great. However my friend who is a designer and used to work at RH told me the rugs are awful…you know the ones that look so beautiful in the showroom? He said they often change those out as much as once a month because they become so ratty and worn down. You can find many “dupes” for the design and look you want, for a fraction of the price. In my opinion, I’d rather buy a cheaper rug that looks nice and change it out every so often.

Yes, viscose is just a fancy name for rayon. I agree with the link above. While $300 is cheap for a rug that size, it's not cheap if it doesn't last long at all. I would never spend money on a "place-holder" rug. One need never apologize for a bare floor or wall! Wait for what you truly want.

Anglophilia, I know... I've never subscribed to the placeholder approach, but these are really pretty and I only need it for 2 years. But that's still wasteful, yes.

Ingrid, you reminded me to look at Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor polypropylene rugs so I will do that. Thank you!

I'm partial to the Rug Chick blog for information -- I've found it quite helpful.
