New Construction Windows

I need help! I have been quoted a vinyl window by PlyGem Windows and also Comfort View windows. Both companies are telling me the other is junk. I am so confused. Can someone tell me what windows you would recommend in a new construction house in Georgia? Thanks in advance!

Comfort View from what I know is a poor window. The Plygems I have been told is not terrible (my opinion of anything Plygems notwithstanding). Do you have a choice in the windows or are they coming as a package with the house? Who is going to install as the installation is just as important as the product and framers traditionally do a poor job of installation. Are you using Double/Single Hungs or Casement windows?

I have a choice. I am looking at Sun Windows (Clad) and now Simonton Windows (vinyl). Two complete different ranges of price. I really want a good window that Im not going to pay an arm and leg for. I am looking for an installer now... I think the plan was the framers... but after reading the reviews, I will hire someone good. Suggestions in the south Atlanta area?

Rotted sills are pretty commonplace and most of the rot that people see is often times draining behind the exterior cladding of the home and therefore not rotting structure. You need to take a closer look (i.e. remove some exterior cladding and inspect structure or remove the sill and take a look at the rough opening). While the rot may look significant, a majority of what is out there is non-structural and therefore does not require a full tear out. If you go full tear out, you absolutely should use a flanged/new construction window. Having asbestos siding certainly complicates matters a bit and you would be well advised to check code requirements as it pertains to that specific ACM (Asbestos containing material). There are more stringent requirements if the material is removed professionally (i.e. by a contractor) as compared to the homeowner (not all together dissimilar than the RRP fiasco).

You can do that in a pinch...we have done it on several jobs where what the customer wanted was not available in a replacement offering. The drawback to it is usually the frame is thicker so you loose more visible glass than you would with a true replacement, and a replacement is designed to fit into the frame of another window and be screwed in place, and the screw holes are pre drilled where that will not do any damage to the hardware of the window, drilling yourself you may hit a locking mechanism or other piece of hardware that would have to be replaced. You should be able to order the new construction window without nailing flanges as in many applications nailing flanges can not be used (ie concrete walls in some ICF houses)

400 would kind of be below the Marvin Ultima and wood Ultrex . The 400 Woodwright would be above the wood Ultrex and below Ultima. I'd consider both Andersens to be above the Marvun all Ultrex , but it is an another class of window. The Andersens do not feature aluminum or fiberglass in those lines, they are painted wood and Fibrex. Performance wise they are all very similar in U values and DP ratings, air infiltration numbers on the Andersens are very good, Marvins are known to be poor but I haven't seen any first hand ratings. Price wise should be in this order but may not be: Ultima, 400 Woodwright,Wood Ultrex, 400 , All Ultrex. I am not to familiar with Kolbe's line up.

We dealt with AVI in Atlanta with our new construction. They carry Marvin. We used the Marvin Integrity with wood inside and are very pleased with the product. AVI is a certified Marvin installer also and their service and follow up was excellent. I would definitely give them a look. AVI Atlanta Link

I would look at the Integrity as lkbum mentions above. My opinion of Sun Windows is no much, Simonton are ok.
