Blue Star leaping flames...WTH is this now?

Hi GW friends! For about a year, we've been using a Blue Star 30 inch natural gas range. I like it very much. Just a few months ago it started doing this weird thing - if the oven is preheating and I use the range top, the flames from the range top leap away from the holes where the gas is coming out. So there's a gap between the hole and the flame bottom. The range top "thinks" there is no flame because the flames are sitting above the gas holes and so starts clicking the starter. It's freaking annoying.

This weirdness only happens if the oven is preheating.

Obviously I need someone to look at it but thought you'd know off-hand what the issue might be. Anyone have any ideas on this one? TIA
