We are ordering new garage doors and will be painting soon so I do unfortunately have to stress about my accent colors. I would rather whitewash so that stone looks more natural than if I painted it a solid color.

@decoenthusiaste Thank you for your comment! So when I say recent, I guess it's been a little over 6 months, time flies! Our neighborhood homes are all very unique builds from the 80's on very large lots so I'm not overly concerned with clashing as there isn't anyone too close to us but it's also hard to pinpoint a neighborhood "style". Many of them have the contrasting color outlining (which I'm not a huge fan of either), and a combination of materials: stone, stucco, brick, wood siding, etc. I'm holding off on the landscaping up around the house because we will probably be doing a major reno to the exterior and I don't want to worry about new plantings being messed up during that process. I have attached close ups of the existing door. Ideally we'd replace it with a double door and add some type of covered porch, though I've been told that would be tricky with the roof line (I don't have enough experience to agree or disagree with this). We've been toying with the idea of squaring up all the arches and going with some style of Hardie Board Siding instead of the stone/stucco combo to help update the overall look. Any thoughts on this or helping to add character to the house? I just feel like it's very blah and not the warm inviting look we're going for.

If you are really going to replace the roof with a brown one, I'd wait to do anything else until that happens. The stone is classic, and is going to be the material to work around. So the siding is going to need painted a carefully chosen color to tie the roof and the stone together. Then you can replace the storm door with a full view one. A major contributor to something looking 'dated' is the use of colors that don't particularly go with the stone, but are trendy at a certain point in time. I don't think the white does anything for the house, but is a function of when the siding was installed. So a key to making the house not looking dated, now, or in the future, is to select colors that compliment the stone, irregardless of what is currently in style.

The home is charming. Not sure how successful you will be if you change the front door to wood and then keep a screen/storm door over it. The scrubs in front of the bay windows should be lowered to a height below the window sills. The bushes seem to be taking over that end of the house.
