Luxury Vinyl Tile

Any pros/ cons? The name makes me laugh a bit as it evokes memories of the 80's linoleum but I've found this to be more expensive than ceramic "wood" planks and I'm liking the thought of it being more comfortable to walk in with bare feet. Specifically the brand "Tuscan"

Hey Mike.

While LVP looks to be more expensive (raw material price) than ceramic/porcelain tile "wood look" tile, the vinyl works out to be a bit cheaper to INSTALL. Labor costs are much lower on LVP than it is on tile.

Lots of people rave about their LVP. Others are not so happy. The trick to happiness is SUBFLOOR preparation. You will spend the same amount of money on subfloor prep as a tile floor, but the install is faster and therefore cheaper with the vinyl.

A glue down vinyl tile (not all vinyl plank options are designed to be glued - so be careful) is the end all to be all for vinyl flooring. It is also the most expensive version (when all the bills are paid).

So happiness with the product increases with stability of the subfloor and the stability of the install. The more money you pour into the vinyl planks the closer you get to "happy".

Vinyl planks are much more comfortable to walk on than tile. They are rather close to engineered hardwood floors re: comfort. The one detraction from vinyl planks is they RARELY allow underpad. It is super tough/super expensive to get extra padding underneath these types of floors. Again - it is tough to say which one's allow it and which don't.

Direct sunlight is a problem for vinyl. It can warp and curl if too much heat is applied to the floor. It also requires a stable environment or else it does weird things.

At the end of the day the vinyl LVP will be cheaper than porcelain tile after installation is paid for. It is warmer and more comfortable.

Last week we had Armstrong Vivero installed, and so far I love it. The look is fantastic and it's so much quieter than laminate. I started a thread with a picture on the first day of install.

A white-ish wood-look herringbone would be so versatile! I haven't found it yet....hopefully it is "out there" somewhere. We will be replacing cheap engineered hardwood with LVP. I am not sure if the install of the engineered hardwood was faulty or just the cheapness of the product used accounts for the crappy appearance but it has to go. We bought this house less than 2 years ago and the flooring had just been installed by the previous owners. It is cupping and warping and looks awful. There is no way this stuff could ever be refinished. The hardwood that is original to the house (1972 build) is in great condition so that will stay. I had hardwood at my old house and I loved it and refinished it and was always happy with it. LVP is a better fit for this house because we are in the woods and have kid, dog, cats, and not much separation between inside and outside so lots of dirt and mud get tracked in. I had a flooring guy here last week and the LVP products he showed me looked great.

Thank you. Just saw your note from 2020. I apologize. The LVT tiles float, no glue installation. It has fake grout lines where it snaps together. It is heavy and not bendable. I still really like it and it’s easy to clean but shortly after everything closed for COVID, my husband dropped a cup of coffee on it and just the weight of that alone broke one of the fake grout line along the edge of one tile. It doesn’t show because there is concrete slab underneath, same color, but I know it’s there and I’m not sure what to do about it. I don’t know if the tile had a defect or the installer put it in so tight it had no give whatsoever under pressure. I don’t see a way to switch out just that tile, they are snapped together like a jigsaw puzzle and the break is right in the middle.) It has a 50 year residential warranty so I should probably contact the manufacturer. So if you did choose this, first, I hope you and your family are all well, and secondly, I hope you are enjoying it and had no similar issue.

Nc, what style kitchen are you doing? if going w/a porcelain tile, and you have a large enough area, go w/the 24x24 or 30x30. 12x24 can look a little choppy, depending on the type of tile used. for instance, I love these (first 5 are all from Tilebar. you can get 5 samples for $5) oh, and this is a large porcelain tile that when laid looks like a wood inset design. it's porcelain and comes in many colors.

Thanks everyone. I believe there will be some sort of pad underneath. He said it will be "floating" and not glued down. So far I like the samples. It has a rustic pitted look with some variations in the texture.

The Tuscan LVP has come highly recommended to me by two flooring companies that sell multiple lines. We are using it in our basement and guesthouse (which is attached to a barn so needs sturdy flooring).
