Just rescued this guy, can I repot it in the gritty mix now?
Comments (10)This is not the optimal time to be re-potting. The very best time would be later in Spring, between flushes of growth, after the plant has recovered some of the energy reserves that it lost during the Winter. I am telling you this to prepare you for the worst and so that you'll have more reasonable expectations. That said, you are in a warmer zone...and that can make a great deal of difference. In other words, a Winter re-potting in your climate will be less traumatic to the tree than a re-potting at this time of year in, say, Michigan or Ontario. I would not recommend "aggressive" root-pruning. I would simply try to unwind and straighten the roots in order to keep as much as possible. Of course, you will want to remove any roots that are girdling other roots/trunk, any j-hook and strangely angled stiff roots, et cetera. If you are determined to go forward with this re-potting, follow these tips: 1) Prepare all your materials ahead of time (a helper wouldn't hurt, either). 2) Work quickly but carefully - fine-roots will dry out and die within 5 minutes of exposure. 3) A bucket of semi-warm water will help remove old soil and won't shock the roots with cold temps. 4) When you re-pot, add a little mix at a time, then use a chopstick to work the new mix into ALL the air-spaces between the roots. Be very thorough. Do not leave open pockets around the roots. 5) Orient the tree so that it is upright and balanced (not leaning one way or the other). Secure the tree to a stake that is located at the edge of the container, not against the trunk (as in the pic). The more secure the tree is, the faster the roots will establish themselves in the new mix. 6) Water the tree well with semi-warm water, then place the tree in an area that is sheltered from direct sun and wind for approximately two weeks. Check the soil moisture every three days, making sure not to let the tree become too dry - a newly re-potted plant needs to stay more moist than a fully established citrus (which should dry down a bit between waterings). 7) After two weeks, begin to fertilize again at reduced strength. Let me re-iterate, however: now is not the best time to be re-potting. Josh...See MoreTips for Miele oven owners from our Miele service guy
Comments (22)When I bought my oven Masterchef was included. There was no option. I've used it twice in 8 years and could easily do without it. However, I've read posts from people who were buying the oven for Masterchef. It works well if you don't know how to cook, or aren't sure or don't want to bother. If the oven doesn't have it then attention really must be paid to learning the way the various combination heat settings work and which to use for what since this is European convection. Example: one of my favorite settings -- autoroast -- is a cold-oven setting. By that I mean no preheat is required. The food is started in a cold oven then both the broiler and oven element are engaged to sear and bring the oven up to temperature. Autoroast isn't suitable for a souffle. But it's great for roasting poultry, meat or veggies -- and terrific for Thanksgiving turkey which is heavy and cumbersome to put into a preheated oven. Learning the oven is well worth it IMO but the alternative to figuring it out is Masterchef settings. Depends on your needs....See MoreDid you tip the guys that installed your granite?
Comments (13)No...for one, they did a barely acceptable job...and it was barely acceptable only after I insisted they fix several things (>1" gap b/w wall & counter, uneven slabs seamed together (twice!!!), mis-matched seam color). PLUS, they irreparably damaged a cabinet that held up the project another 4 weeks or so while we waited for the new cabinet! (And don't get me started on the PR!) Bottom line, they didn't earn a tip...plus they charged an arm & a leg anyway... (I was stuck with them) Remember, a tip is something that's earned...it's not a "given". So many people just assume they have to tip regardless of the service they receive that it's become expected...even from those who give you bad service. (Do you tip 18%-20% when you get bad service at a restaurant...I'm not talking about a kitchen mistake or something out of the server's control, I mean just plain bad service from the server him/herself?)...See MoreTip Cabinet Delivery Guys?? (Here now!)
Comments (9)It depends. If they're basically offloading the truck into the garage then the delivery isn't time consuming or difficult. If they're bringing the cabinets into your home (because the garage is full of other remodeling stuff or no garage) then most people tend to get a bit fussier with the care taken and this slows the delivery down. If that's the case, then tipping is an appropriate compensation for the added time and care needed in that situation. Delivery drivers are on a schedule, and are paid by the stop as well as the distance between stops. When you slow things down, you are costing them some money. It's only appropriate that you compensate them for that. And, if you are going to have your cabinets delivered to the interior of your home, it's also incumbent upon you to protect that interior by laying down hardboard or cardboard for the delivery route and moving anything that might get in the way or get broken. They'll be as careful as possible, but accidents can happen and there's no point in not creating the least accident prone environment that you can!...See Moredebo_2006
