When it first sprouted it seemed kind of vine-like and I thought it might be a blackberry/raspberry plant because it had small thorns of that type. But it quickly became upright and is a stout shrub (about 30 inches tall in just a few months) with needle-like thorns at least an inch long.

The leaves are under 2" long, and I snipped some off for a closer view of their arrangement and veins.

The yellow flowers are a neighboring lantana.
