Comments (2)I don't know what the spots might be but it's certain that it won't make the pears unhealthy for you to eat. There are all kinds of fungal and insect larval problems that affect plants. Comments (3)Once pear trees have scab, and Bosc is particularly susceptible, regular fungicide applications of an affective compound like mancozeb may be necessary. Pear psyla, an aphid like insect, can also cause defoliation in conjunction with fabrea fungus. Hort oil mixed with Surround can solve this with several applications starting at petal fall at latest. The spores of various plant fungal diseases can exist independently from the plant so no way to know if the trees were infected before or after purchase. Did the trees come with a warranty? Many nurseries will guarantee their plants (usually for whatever reason) for a set period of time, often a year. How was the problem diagnosed? You will need an accurate ID first but many fruit tree fungal problems can be addressed by fungicidal sprays but the proper timing of these sprays is often critical....See Morekudzu9
