Is our Vanderwolf Pine dying?

Needles at the bottom are all brown and inner needles up 3/4 of the tree are brown. What did we do wrong? Not enough water? Any recommendations to keep this tree alive-it was planted last Fall and it was looking great at the end of spring/beginning of summer

no conifer holds its needles forever.. interior browning is normal on a cycle.. and increased by stresses ... and yours is still under transplant stresses ...

some of the non interior.. sure look like a dog .. possible???

also.. that area could have been affected by the physical planting and hoiking of the plant ...

make sure its properly watered.. and you should be all set... its not hungry.. no fert ...

if you want to discuss further.. where are you.. when planted.. how planted.. how watered since ... potted or BB?

Yours is not dying but this one is (please, someone tell me it has a chance, pic taken today) and I have no idea why. 3 years in the ground always looked fine then it went downhill quickly starting about a month ago.. If I had to guess, I didnt plant it on a high enough mound. My "soil" is very wet as leeches and mole salamanders live in it. It also could use more sun.

A buck snapped the trunk of this one to the ground 2-3 years ago(it was about 5-6' tall). It is starting to pick up speed in its growth.

As long as I make the planting mound tall/big enough, my conifers live. From front going back. Abbotts Pygmy, Sester Colorado, Spaan's Dwarf, Vanderwolf, Canaan Fir, Hoopsi. The Hoopsi certainly lives up to its name and then some.

None of the conifers in my front yard get as much sun as they should(pic is taken facing North) My house will start about 5' back from bottom of above pic, I had about 40-50 dump trucks of fill dirt brought in as last summer the footprint of my future house was full of frogs-sorry frogs. That is an American Basswood, Behind/to left of basswood is a 90?' Norway spruce, Sorry for hijack, took some pics today.

The top of the root ball is below the surrounding grade. Not sure what amend the soil means but I put really good soil in the hole. I know the hole was pretty big.I had a neighbor walk by as I was planting it and said I needed a pretty big hole. I did remove the burlap, but someone also told me the roots would grow through the burlap? I'm obviously a first-timer.

Shadey- It should do well in Chicago area. It can be a very pretty tree. I planted three in west central Ohio last year. They are only about 18" to begin with, but putting out some nice buds this year. It will grow to be a large tree, growing 12" or more a year. They have long soft needles with a blueish tint to them. They are very similar (in my opinion) to a White Pine, but much more full, and better color providing more interest. The local Home Depot had some nice ones last year (5-6 feet). That's where I came across them. I went home to research them, but before I could get back to get them they had sold so I began searching for them online. This year all the big box's have them. are you sure your not talking about Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda)? Ponderosa Pine is a western species...not native to long island...hope you mean long island NY here. If you mean the Loblolly Pine they are dying out because of global warming. Sea levels are rising and salt water is starting to fill in underground freshwater aquifers along the coast. The rising sea levels are forcing water to the surface creating poor drainage and a higher pH. This is happening all along the atlantic coast by the way.
