The shopping Trip - Long
Comments (7)Tibs, Your tale was humorous although bitter-sweet..your neighbor is lucky. Either a keypad lock or change the cylinders so a master key fits all doors might help. When our son moved out and we were aging, I had custom security doors made of wrought iron with screening so I could leave wooden doors open for fresh air. They were refitted when we moved a few years ago. One key fits all. I have keys near each door on colorful beaded chain which we just hang around our neck while gardening. Easy to remember to replace after locking door when we return...that colorful chain is easier to notice than a tiny keychain. When we leave house we take other keys in purse or pocket but those beaded chained keys remain in designated spots near the doors ...they are for emergency escape if needed..don't want to have to look for purse or pocket litter in case of fire. I hope this is clear, I thought some system like this might help. I've tried to stay "ahead of the aging curve" and make our safety/comfort easier to maintain. It does take planning and sometimes expense but sometimes it balances out. We no longer drive but the savings on auto upkeep mostly pays for taxis or housekeeper driving us. We're lucky in that our son and his family sometimes want to do too much...I try and limit our SOS calls to real emergencies like asking him to shop for and hook up my DVD player...LOL josh...See MoreBarstool and Body Shop question for you...
Comments (1)Some of the smaller ones do (do not even call the big chain type outfits) they have a spray booth and spray equipment that will give you a great smooth finish however the cost will be high unless you do all the prep work yourself and if not prepped correctly the super smooth finish will show every flaw in you prep work. I would probably invest in some new ones or just grab a can of spray paint from the hardware and go at it myself. If you really want a super dursble finish and have lots of spare cash check into the powdercoating process lots of motorcycle shops that do painting work have the perfect setup for small parts like barstools etc....See MoreIs there a quilt shop you REFUSE to shop at?
Comments (14)My experiences have really all been good. Generally, the quilt shops in my life have really made an effort to be welcoming and chatty and create an atmosphere of a social club. That includes the 3 shops in my area in LA and the 2 wonderful ones in Vancouver. Browsing and buying nothing or a spool of thread or a notion is common and they know that and also know people will be back when the time for fabric purchases comes along. But times have changed too and only one shop will cut a FQ from the bolt for you. And I don't know of a shop that will still cut 1/8 yd. Haven't seen a FE in many, many years. They also know that everyone shops all the shops. One (the one nearest me) specializes in Civil War era and 30s fabrics. They don't have any purples or teals at all and no batiks. How could they not know and support that people need to go elsewhere for that stuff? I have heard from teachers that they don't like the largest, most well stocked shop. And, in truth, sometimes the ladies there can be moody but I've never been treated badly. And once when I was taking a class the teacher told me a story about the shop that I loved most that has been gone for 25 years. Their stock of antique buttons and imported French ribbons was fantastic. Their fabrics and samples were to die for. But apparently the woman who owned the shop was a tyrant to her help. And sometimes, the teacher said, to customers. She reported many occasions when the owner would refuse to sell a fabric to someone because she wouldn't have used it with the other selected fabrics. Sounds mighty eccentric to me but working in that environment was pretty intolerable the veteran with the scars said. I wonder if, as some of you are saying, the stress of how business is gets reflected in the service. The shops here do well and have a flow of customers and a roster of classes. ...at least for now. Two of the locals have cancelled classes I was the only one to register for....See MoreHeadboard help--aka, Let's shop!
Comments (20)kswl, glad to know about microseal. I am having my MBR headboard reupholstered in white linen. jojoco, do you have any “full-service” fabric stores nearby? The headboards for the twin beds in my guest room are being made at a fabric store. The ID I’m working with suggested using them. The headboards are well made and I get to customize height, fabric, nailheads, etc. And then there is Pottery Barn with loads of choices. When Mtn mentioned that her headboard was slip covered, I was reminded of the slip covered headboards PB used to carry. I think there are a few slipcovered headboards still available at PB. I like the simplicity of this headboard...See Moreaimeekm
