How much do you usually spend?
Comments (14)It's a game of sorts. I pride myself on how much gardening I can accomplish without spending and yet, axillary costs can add up. I often drive to a horse farm to get free manure. Over the course of the spring, summer, and fall, I probably make between eight and ten trips. It's about 25 miles round trip. However, if I do so on Sunday mornings, church takes up about half of those miles. Just take off your suit coat, put on the boots and load 23 five gallon containers of horse manure into your little red Neon. You can then add, old wooden pallets for raised beds, freebie leaves, UCG, free cycle windows for the raised beds, etc. I wonder how much I spend on gas each year to get my free stuff. Heck, it's a game and, quite frankly, it's fun....See MoreDoes Sam's Club take SIMILAC checks? How much does formula cost?
Comments (9)My husband works for Sam's Club, and they do not take those check/coupons. My DS is on Isomil Similac and we have found the best deals at Walmart. For some reason, the Walmart by our house offers the huge can (1lb,14oz) for 2 dollars cheaper than the walmart by my work. My DH says it is b/c the income level is lower where we live. Anyway, the formula is always $15.54 and w/ a $2 coupon, it's only $13.54. At Kmart or Fry's, the SAME can is $22.50. The difference is amazing! Comments (4)Get a detailed bid! We hired painters for the first time last year because of a time crunch getting the house ready for DS wedding. They bid the whole job...big mistake! But since we'd never used painters before we didn't know. Our job consisted of painting the LR, DR, foyer, stairs, and upstairs hall. Some wallpaper needed to be removed from stairs and foyer. We also asked them to sand the stair treads which were rough looking. They were supposed to do two coats but did one because we found holidays. We specified BM Regal Select and they used the builder grade and a cheaper brand altogether on the ceiling. They never sanded the stairs and when we pointed it out, the guy whips out a small piece of sandpaper...any idiot would know a power sander was required. They had to come back to paint the inside of a closet they forgot to do. Also, a no brainer when we paint but apparently not for "professionals" they merely painted around the chandelier and did not undo it for 15 minutes to paint under the plate. When we went to replace it...surprise! The new plate was smaller and we did not have the paint to fill in so had to purchase a decorative plate to cover it. We aren't the types to complain, but we did in this instance. We managed to get some $ knocked off the bill but I think it should have been more. If the bid was more detailed we could have better pinpointed what charges should be reduced. This company had high marks on AL and from the Ben Moore store. My advice...get a separate price for each room and details for each room..i.e in DR remove wallpaper $500, prep, $200, two coats paint $400 and so on....then, if they screw up the DR only, you negotiate on the $1100. I would also have them include how many cans are needed for two coats in each room and then I would purchase the paint myself, tell them not to throw out any cans, even empty, and inventory at the end of the day when they leave. I understand that not everyone has the time or inclination to paint, but of all the trades it is the biggest rip off because most people can do it themselves (unlike electrical, plumbing)with good results, yet it is so expensive to have done. I don't ever plan to hire it out again...we could have done a better job ourselves and saved a few thousand dollars....See MoreHow much does re-upholsering costs?
Comments (15)Two years ago I had a lot of furniture reupholstered at one time. We paid $375 each for five club chairs on the smallish side, NOT including the fabric. Our 81" sofa was about $700, and two chair and a halfs together were $1200. I had five occasional chairs done and they ranged between $250 and $300 (the latter price for Martha Washington chairs, each). This was in 2006, and I received a substantial discount because of the volume of work. I believe we had 18 pieces: two sofas, five occasional chairs, five club chairs, two barstools, two chair-and-a-halfs and a giant ottoman and a normal-sized ottoman. The upholsterer I used was about an hour north, and they charged a pick-up/delivery fee that I thought was reasonable. Again, these prices did not include fabric, which I purchased through our designer....See Moreblueocean m
