What cabinets will coordinate with dark QS oak?
Comments (10)Rhome, we cross posted. Thank you so much for your kind words (and for all of the help during my very long planning phase). It's hard to believe we started out wanting a white kitchen and ended up here. It fits in so well with the rest of the house. We couldn't be happier! I can't wait to get the backsplash in so I can finally do a "finished kitchen" post. I love the blue/green paint too but the kitchen is dark and with the soapstone and dark cabinets, it feels a bit oppressive to me. I'm waiting until the backsplash goes in before I make a final decision. I could trim the entrance from the mudroom to the kitchen, keep the mudroom the color it is and paint the cabinets white. I also love the idea of gray cabinets (almost did that in the kitchen) but am not sure it would go with the walls. What color walls would you put with gray cabinets and a black and white checkerboard floor? I'll bet Martha Stewart would know!...See MoreThey're here! QS White Oak Kitchen Cabs-picture heavy!
Comments (47)Wolfgang- I don't see any in my file before the oil. It did add some color, maybe 1-2 shades. You can google unfinshed quarter sawn oak cabinets and there might be a picture to compare it too. I think the oil actually helped pick up alot of the veining and warmth of the wood. It also helped accentuate the darker and lighter portions of the cabinet to give it more variation. We did a matte oil, so it has no real sheen to it....See MoreFor those with Alder cabinets - what color stain?
Comments (11)I have alder and I love it. But it was quite an ordeal getting them right. When I chose them I told the cabinet maker I wanted a "nice warm natural" color. Out of that, he focused on the word "natural" and only sealed them. That might have worked except for the fact that there's a lot of variation in the wood. Here's what showed up in my kitchen: I totally freaked at the clown stripes. We had to have them pulled out, stripped and stained to even it out. It was my mistake to be so general, I suppose, his to place that lighter board where it stuck out like a sore thumb. It cost us $2K and months of delay since we went to any available slot in the cabinet maker's and GC's production schedules after that. It was worth it though. Here's what we ended up with when they stained the lighter boards to make them fit in and then stained the whole expanse: and another spot where you can see the wood to better advantage: I love the richness of the wood and its rustic quality. I hope you will too. Just specify that you want the boards hand selected for uniformity or good attention to the stain....See MoreHave your QS oak cabs darkened over time?
Comments (15)White oak is one of the woods that will oxidize to black given enough time and air exposure. (can't speak to red oak...) But if you keep the air away, like under a finish, then it keeps a very consistent color longer. Oak is not prone to sun-darkening as cherry is famous for doing. The finish on the wood can change color. Oil varnish is noteworthy for yellowing(ambering?) and old-formula lacquers would often go greenish. I finished my own white oak cabinets, and used pore filler, gel stain, shellac, and a single wiped-on top coat of gel varnish for wear. This was done in 2006 and I can't say I detect any darkening yet. Casey...See Moremissmelnel
