Medium Stained Alder Cabinets/Cookingpassion
Comments (29)Lindy, if I knew the formula for "Custom" I would have no problem sharing it with you! :) The company that I borrowed this sample from is Dickinson Cabinetry in San Jose, CA (408-227-0445) in case your builder would like to contact them. We are either going with them or Savage Designer Cabinets in Rocklin, CA. They are both custom cabinet makers who get their doors from Cal Door. rollie, the brand is Cal Door and almost all custom cabinet makers we've talked to in N. California get their doors from them. Also, the company they all get their corbels and moldings from is Enkeboll Designs. vfish, before we got a chance to actually see the door styles in person, we chose the Napa door (all right, maybe it had something to do with the name since we're building on a vineyard!) However, once we went to go look at the different door styles, my DH and I both immediately picked the Delaware door! As far as the style of our home, well, let's just say I started quite a thread about that on the Home Decorating forum entitled: What would you call this style? I guess we've determined it to be a "Spanish-Inspired Santa Barbara California Mission/Italian Villa" style home! :) Our initial draft renderings and floorplan are on the thread, if you're interested in taking a peek......See MoreNew alder cabinets installed - Is this normal for alder?
Comments (43)Mayflowers - I dont know about the stain or the finish. So here is an update. I discovered from our designer that these are not custom made cabinets. They were made by Mid Continent Cabinets. Apparently this factory is not able to, or doesnt want to, pick out less knotty pieces of alder to remake the doors. We could ask them to remake x doors and drawers and we might get x drawers and doors that are worse, or better, or the same. This seems like very odd quality control to me, and a huge waste of everyone's time. Our designer spoke with someone at Mid Continent who said that alder is a poor man's cherry, and that we should be able to replace all the doors with cherry. She left us a sample and indeed it looks like it might work, But Mid Continent quoted us $2600 to remake all drawers and doors in cherry. Our designer said she would pay half "because she and I are both guilty of miscommunication during the initial cabinet design", even though I gave her the exact bill of materials that we had chosen a year ago with another company. As well as shown her pictures of the cabinets. Whatever. So my question to you guys - Ive heard that cherry darkens with time. Would you take the chance getting cherry drawers and doors on an alder frame? The colors match very well right now. Personally, I kind of want our designer to reimburse us some $$$ and use it to get custom doors and drawers from a builder who actually cares about quality and can hand pick the alder. And then she can wash her hands of this mess and we can take responsibility of the final product rather then being at the mercy of unhelpful companies like Mid Continent....See MoreBarker Cabinets - Alder wood in Tamarack stain

Comments (3)Age is taking my eyes but where light is reflected the surface looks lumpy/bumpyuneven. I suspect that's the result of not hand sanding before staining and/or not lightly sanding after staining to remove "wiskers"raised by stain (IF STAIN IS WATER BASED). The clear looks to have been sprayed which accents imperfections right along with other features. Each piece of wood and finishing product is slightly different, therefore one must get a feel for what's happening then make adjustments as finish is applied....See Moreremodel1958
