RAR - Corrupted files

Hi Experts,

How do I fix corrupted
rar files, or at least extract whatever is possible? Or
knows someone a good rar recovery tool?

Open WinRAR choose the
"Extract to" button on the toolbar in the window that opens
"Keep broken files" is on the bottom right under Miscellaneous.

You could also try
(from the drop down menu) "Repair archive (Alt+R)" but do this on a copy of the file.

If will show error "the
archive is either in unknown format or damaged" you're getting
means that the file is corrupted, so it just cannot be repaired.

But maybe the file is
not completely corrupted and some part of the information can be saved. I think
there will a RAR recovery items. If you want to try this tool RAR Recovery Toolbox

It could be corrupted when prepared OR when transmitted. Have the person reshrink the contents into a new file and resend it. Zip tends to be less problematic than RAR but everyone has their preference.

RAR tended to be used in the past by people preparing files to "share" via BitTorrent. Is this something you got that way?

I believe what happened is that you opened the archive(.rar) and simply got a peek inside the archive. Double-clicking the pic caused it to be extracted to a "temp" directory where it was subsequently opened by your image viewer. It wasn't really hidden, just not "really" extracted. To extract the contents of the entire archive, you can right-click the unopened archive and select "Extract here". Or if you just need a file or two out of the archive, you can open the archive, select the desired file, and extract it. Myself, I would do that by dragging the file out onto my desktop. I'm going by memory, which may not be accurate. Also, I'm thinking of how I would do it with WinRAR. If you're using 7-zip or something built into Win8, then I don't really know. I suspect it would work similarly?

The only thing I can think of is to run chdsk, on the drive here's how, Start-->Run-->cmd Type in the following: CHKDSK C: /F > C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT (note: substitute "CHKDSK C" for your drive letter) Hit your Enter key. Click YES on the popup to reboot. After CHKDSK has run type this in Start : Run... C:\CHKDISKLOG.TXT Notepad will open to allow you to view the results of Check Disk

A corrupted file wouldn't do that, but a corrupted file system might. The drive may still be okay, but it's likely that the files on it are lost. Something like spinrite might be able to recover the files, or if you don't need to recover them, you can try reformatting to see if the drive is still usable.

It was a file that I created and it has not been used. now it doesn't open. can't it be due to the reinstallation of Windows?

Try it again, and maybe try zip instead. You could be using a defective encoding program or maybe it just hiccuped the first time.
