I suppose by "soil-less mix" they mean perlite or vermiculite. You will find there are many ways people start seeds here. At first I tried sowing them directly into the garden, but our Texas sun just cooked the seeds. Then I tried the plastic cup method without much success, maybe I over/under watered them. I've had great success starting seeds in plastic containers with lids. I bought a plastic shoe box(Dollar Store)and punched some holes in the bottom(using an old screwdriver that was heated on my gas stove). Then I filled it about half full of good potting soil which I watered well. Then I laid the seeds on top and covered then with potting soil, about a 1/2 inch layer and again watered well. Then put the lid on, placed it outside in a shady place and then came the hard part...waiting. In about a week, or less they started poking through the soil. I left the lid on till they were touching it. Do not water during this time, but you can begin watering after the lid is removed. I left them in the shoe box until they were about 6 inches tall before transplanting to their new home, but I have left them much longer. I have milder winters and a very long growing season, so I usually start seeds this time of year for Fall planting. People in colder climates who have fresh seeds usually start their seeds indoors in late winter for Spring planting. They store their dried seeds in containers in the fridge. Perhaps someone from a more similar climate can tell you something about storing seeds.

Ed, Thank you very much. I live close to Fred Bennett's place and saw these two daylilies in his garden. I made a list of daylilies I want to buy when I was at his open house, but there were so many I couldn't possibly remember each one and want now to decide/choose a few from this long list to order. I found pictures of all except these two. I have a special mark next to CF, looks like I really liked it. This is a lesson always bring camera with me when I go to see daylilies :( Thank you. Olga

I should add, I get creeped out thinking about buying soft items like mattresses and then when I see an unmade bed, that does it for me. Normally, I would not have a problem with the headboard, footboard and frame. It just looks like someone got out of bed and then decided, hey I'm going to sell the bed!

Wes Kirby was Mary Jane's brother. I read that she started hybridizing when he asked her to pollinate the flowers for him when he went to work. He died just recently, I believe. Sherry, it is listed in both the AHS database and the National Gardening Association's websites. The AHS site has been a little weird after their update. Bob has found that if you put a space before the name in the search field, it won't find the name. Dick, that is lovely. What a nice clump! I look forward to seeing it in my garden. Nancy
