The correct name is Alocasia 'Poly", it's a hybrid, a cross between a couple of other Alocasias. They're very sensitive to over watering so you need a fast draining soil. I'd avoid using peat but otherwise just make sure your mix is light. They like to be evenly moist. Some of mine go into a dormancy for a couple of years for no apparent reason, but then come out of it growing normally. So don't toss it out if that happens to yours.

Thank you. I knew the correct name was 'Poly' and I thought I listed it as "Alocasia Poly/Amazonica" in my edit. But I see it did not go through. I only used Amazonica being I figured since it's more common people would know what I was talking about.

Anyways. Thank you for the advice. I've heard a lot of people say there's go dormant after a few years. It is a strange thing but I guess it can also be exciting knowing one day your plant will come back to life.

I would use a mix like the 5-1-1 - 5 parts bark, 1 part perlite, 1 part peat or quality potting mix. Very easy plants to grow as long as they have enough warmth and light during the Winter. Outdoor shade in the Summer and they should bloom.

These plants love heat. If you want them to grow well, then let them grow outside in a shaded area during the summer, where it still gets relatively hot, and keep them well watered. I have several of these plants and love them. One pot of them went dormant last winter and stayed that way. They stayed that way until I moved them outdoors for the summer, then they started growing again. I went and bought more of them earlier this year, and they they've been growing like crazy here in the hot and humid South. I just make sure that they don't dry out, and they take care of the rest. It seems like the hotter they get, the more leaves they send out. I never seen a plant that loves the heat more than these do. Fortunately for them, we've got more than enough of that to go around here where I live.

Mrsjd, I would stay with something similar to the mix it's in, but be very careful not to overpot it. Move up to a pot only an inch or two bigger, at the most. I slightly overpotted several similar alocasias and one rotted completely. I immediately potted the other two back down to containers only a little bigger than the original.

Tropicbreeze, I agree a light mix is good, but what ingredients would you recommend if peat is eliminated? Maybe coir instead, if it's available?

I still think the old 'soilless' mixes from the 1960s studied and promoted by University of California and Cornell University horticultural departments are excellent for many tropicals today. One mix was 1 or 2 parts peat moss, 1 part perlite and 1 part vermiculite. The other, which I never used very much, was 1 part peat moss and 1 part vermiculite. These are nearly sterile mixes, unlike those with other ingredients including pine bark. The simple ingredients are available everywhere, but on the minus side, they're perhaps too light and dry out too fast in some environments, and taller plants can blow over if outside.

Photo Synthesis, you obviously are having great success, what medium are you using? I wonder if Miracle-Gro amended with extra perlite and maybe some ground pine bark would be a good mix for these small alocasias. Coir is hard to find in some parts of the country.
