Ransom Trojan

I clicked on a FB suggested sponsored post then the pop up appeared with a voice telling me my browser is locked and to call a number to get it fixed. Of course I know not to do that but how do I get rid of it without having to take my lap top in. I tried uninstalling Chrome but when I tied it through the control panel it told me I needed to shut down Google windows first which I cannot do.

I am so mad at myself for clicking on that link. I am usually so careful. Usually Avast stops me from opening infected links but not this time. I also just scanned with Malwarebytes and it didn't show anything

Seems a waste to not remove it anyway. At least you could still use the old computer. Its amazing how quickly you can pick up a nasty innocently. Googling can be dangerous unless you are warned about certain sites. Owbist gave you a good tool with Web of Trust (WOT). I've used it for years and it warns you when you click on a website that is dangerous. Happened to me last night when I was searching for an answer to a computer problem. The tool actually prevents you from clicking on the site with a large warning. The site I was going to came up in a Google search for my computer problem. Looked legit but apparently it wasn't. You should download WOT on your new machine to prevent another problem in the future. It is so scary how many malicious websites are out there. Good luck, Jane

Is it something like this? What's the name of it? Antivirus Soft is a rogue anti-spyware and ransomware program from the same family as Antivirus Live. These infections are installed on to your computer through the use of malware that installs the program onto your computer without your permission or knowledge. It is also common for this rogue to be installed on your computer through the use of malicious PDF files that exploit known vulnerabilities in older versions of Adobe Reader. Once installed, Antivirus Soft will be configured to start automatically when Windows starts. Once running it will scan your computer and display numerous infections, but will state it will not remove them until you purchase the program. In reality, the infected files it detects are all fake and do not actually exist on your computer. This program also uses aggressive techniques to protect itself from being removed by anti-malware programs. When the Antivirus Soft process is running it will close almost any running program while falsely stating that they are infected. Antivirus Soft will also change the Proxy settings in Internet Explorer so that you cannot browse to any web site other than the site for Antivirus Soft so that you can purchase the program. It does this so that you cannot browse the web to find removal guides or download software that will help you remove the infection. Using these two methods, the program essentially ransoms the normal use of your computer until you purchase the program or use the guide below to remove the infection.

System prophylaxis is regularly mentioned to be a tiered approach as no one application is totally capable and full-proof. Your AV is the only real-time monitor and should be kept updated. It is a fine idea to have a reputable malware detection application or two installed and current with updates.. These will be on-demand ready to assist if ever needed. Remember some bugs can prevent a system from connecting to the Internet. Myself, I have AVG, SAS and MBAM. The last two just in case. You have a very difficult ransomware Trojan that's doing that, you would need to visit a malware removal forum or take it in for repair, You can try rkill and that may work to stop it from shutting down the computer, but you will need to a lot more work after that to entirely remove this nasty. You may need to put rkill on a usb drive using a good computer, then transfer that usb drive to the infected one. If you are seeing a random“Windows Warning Error” pop-up and asking you to call a phone number to fix your PC, then your computer is infected with an adware or a potentially unwanted program.

If you want, post here, for a closer look. I can't run the necessary scans on this forum because of its design

We can look at a log file, Other wise it becomes a guessing game as to what exactly is going on. hopefully it's just a browser pop up scam link and nothing really got installed.

Zeb, I was finally able to uninstall Chrome, did another malwarebytes scan and it showed no threat. I am hoping things are okay now. Thank you both.

Sounds good.

also try the bitdefender quickscan.

When it finishes there is a View Report option at the bottom. Click on it and copy and paste the report (even if it says nothing found).

tried it here on win10/14393.103 which is latest cumulative upgrade as of yesterday don't know if public yet or not

... that scan didn't work at all on ms edge browser... does nothing.

IE the plugin appeared to install but didn't and scan said done instantly .. it didn't do a thing.. Scan failed! Error -9997 in its report.

Tried it on firefox 48.02, plug in installs but doesn't run - firefox says page has crashed.

Didn't mess with it beyond that.
