Comments (13)We had a long discussion about it two or three years ago. MichaelG suggested that it should and could be alternaria blight. Comparing my roses to the very few photos of alternaria available I had serious doubt that it could be anything else but botrytis. I also sent photos to NCStte univeristy that provides consultation and does lab tests for Extension Services. They came back with Botrytis. I also sent them samples but by the time they got it the samples were contaminated with something that is present on dying tissues. They ruled out alternaria - the guy who answered my emails and dent the report on the samples is an expert on alternaris, so I guess, if he rules that out, I should accept this as a fact. So still don't know the scientific answer but those roses of mine sure looked botrytis ridden to me. I also found a paper from Brazil that stated that if humidity's is over 90% for many hours, botrytis spores could survive up to 112F. Here, relatively close to the coast we have o0ver 90^% humidity and dew from early evening till mid morning. That amounts to more than 10 hours, rather more. This again leads me to believe that was botrytis I had. Baldo also said the Botrytis is a year-around problem in Hawaii....See MoreHow to get rid of dogwood shrubs/subshrubs
Comments (5)I know it is borderline sacrilegious to exterminate perfectly good shrubs/perennials ===>>> thats PC nonsense .. you are the keeper of your domain ... whatever pleases you. go for it ... its not like you are going to pave it.. cut to ground level .. and apply 41% full strength roundup or stumpkiller to the green band that goes around the cut part.. the cambian ... maybe 1/4 teaspoon per plant ... i have some in a mustard holder for ease of drippage ... excess volume is simply a waste.. and pollution ... check beck every month or so.. snip off any new shoots.. and again use the killer on anything green ... in most cases they should be gone by the end of summer.. on all but the most stubborn plants ... in the alternative.. start digging ... ken...See MoreHow do you get rid of powder mold on grass?
Comments (2)You can try one part skim milk to nine parts water. Half and half would be too much. Experiments have indicated that the 1:9 ratio is fairly effective. By the way, powdery mildew should be prevented, if at all possible. Excess fertilization is a major contributing factor to PM infections in turfgrass (and other plants). Cut your grass as high as possible to encourage deeper and stronger root development, too. Try the milk applications and let us know how it worked. It will likely go away once you begin getting some warmer temperatures and more sunlight, though....See MoreMold/fungus? How to get rid of it? Also, plant ID!
Comments (14)This pot does have two fairly large holes in the bottom, as most bonsai pots do; so the pot is definitely able to drain as necessary. I do agree with you all though; the soil is inappropriate and keeping and I haven't like it since after the first week of putting the Fujian Tea in it. I just looked through the different bonsai soils I have. I do have a small amount of a tropical/sub-tropical mix leftover that is recommended for Fujian Teas. Do you think I should swap the current soil for this tropical mix now? There's not enough left in the bag to fill the pot (if I'm lucky, it might fill half the pot), so I would have to mix it with whatever potting soil my mom has leftover, which would probably end up being soil like what is currently being used. Though, I do have a bonsai mix that I bought for a couple Junipers I had. Maybe, instead of half tropical bonsai mix--half inappropriate potting soil, I could do a mix of half tropical bonsai mix--quarter conifer bonsai mix--quarter inappropriate potting soil. I kind of want to put some of that potting soil in the mixture to prevent the plant from becoming too dry. As Al mentioned, the Fujian Tea likes to stay at least a little wet; if I forget to check up or am unable to check up on it for a few days and it becomes too dry, I can basically just kiss it goodbye....See MoreDalton the Bengal (Zone 6)
