Comments (4)Thank you Johnmerr as a response like this will certainly help my patience. I wasn't sure how long the recovery could take so I was afraid that whatever was bothering it was still taking a toll on it. Your help is much appreciated! By the way, Does anybody know what type of bug tends to make holes like the one in the last picture? Maybe 8 or so leaves were damaged in a manner similar to that one. Not all of the bites start at the very edge but most of them are on that section of the leaf and have a similar zig-zag pattern. Random bugs seen around the property but not specifically on the leaves include earwigs, katydids, mealybugs, aphids, whiteflies, leafrollers, thrips, mites, cabbageworms, leafhoppers, etc. Thanks again folks and happy growing! Added follow up. I believe the maIn culprit was found today. An earwing slightly smaller than an inch long and pretty hefty in girth was spotted hanging out on a leaf towards the backside of the tree. Is it possible one earwig would munch through a decent amount of leaves in one week? Seems like damage was done more to younger leaves than the older ones with no signs of smaller insects such as aphids around. Comments (31)If that where here in my yard I say rrd. But you are not in the U.S. So I don't know It does not look seriously worse but not good. No witches broom yet or twisted foliage. As for rose midge they do cause multiple lateral breaks in my roses. If there is no available developing bud they lay their eggs in. They lay them where a new lateral would form or is forming. When they damage this lateral bud the rose send out another. In the mean time another batch hatches to bite this one. The rose responds by sending out more laterals than normal. The growth however of these laterals is normal in appearance. You can check for rose midge by looking in where a lateral would grow it is normally green or reddish green. After being bitten or egg laying the tiny tip turns black or brown and is crusty if touched. I'm glad for this update as I've been wondering how things have turned out for you. Thank you! Comments (58)Jennifer —-(Spraying with Neem Oil and or and other mixtures to eradicate the insects organically could still harm those beneficial insects. Some people will just let those pest stay on the tree because they dont want to harm them. Its a difficlt choice to make for some and you need to understand that some bad infestations that might get out of hand and could cause your trees to become weak and allow other diseses to slowly kill your tree. i always try and let Mother Nature work on the right balance of the pest verses the beneficial insets to keep everything in check. But sometimes i will have to step in and use more than organic to combact the problem. its up to you to decide what is best for your tree. Comments (21)" I actually think it's when true leaves are adapted to the lower radiation levels of artificial indoor light that the plant becomes prone to sun damage. I would guess that, as soon as the growing tip starts producing the first indications of true leaves, that's when you have to start being super careful about sun damage." I'd agree if for no other reason than the cotyledons alone aren't capable of photosyn, only the true leaves. But many times that distinction isn't included in the advice. Shoot I have lost trays of young seedlings sitting in the greenhouse from sunburn, much less outside. What I take issue with is the broad statements made on so many blogs. Utube and even sometimes here, that putting your seedling out in full sun is no problem - no guidelines, no qualifications, no age guidelines, no distinction between full sun in AZ vs. full sun in MN, etc. Newbies read those claims and next thing you know they have a tray full of sun and wind burned plants or dead ones and want to know what happened to them. There is a thread running on this right now over on Vegetable Gardening with pics of young seedlings that were put outside early on and the damage that happened. So the safest approach is to not do it unless you are experienced and really know what you are doing and if you are going to do it be prepared to possibly lose some of your seedlings. If you have 200 of them it is no big deal but if you only started 10-12 plants it can literally wipe you out. But people get impatient and they don't want to bother with proper hardening off procedures. Their choice but they have to pay the price. Dave...See More- 7 years ago
