Comments (30)Without the cabinets and ref, 4 feet is adequate, wall to counter edge, 4.5 feet is better if you're going around the seated people carrying things - like to get dishes or service pieces to/from the dining space while the stools are occupied. With cabinets and chairs, the minimum is really about 5 feet - 3 feet for working space in front of the cabinets. With the ref there, it depends a lot on the exact ref and how irritating it will be when the corner is booked up by someone standing in front of the ref. With a little dash of the unwary trying to come in from dining having ref door open into their face. Typical for counter depth refs (as far as there is typical) is that the whole thing is about 30" deep. It's already using about 6" of aisle. Also, the poster is drawing a cabinet plan so the aisle decreases by about 3" altogether for counter overhangs. In the drawing above with a 42" island, the poster starts with a 3'10ish" aisle between a 42" island and the ref - but it is really drawn as a 2 foot deep cabinet. The poster might be getting a liebherr or subzero or similar where its really 24" deep including everything - dunno. But - again typically, the ref is 6" deeper and the island has another 1.5" to bring to the impacts-the-aisle-space party (it looks like the same omission of accounting for aisle space on the other side, so the island itself might shift some towards the ref to accommodate - up to a total of 4.5"). That would put the finished aisle between 38.5" with a strong possibility of it decreasing to around 34" - not plenty of room for occupied stool, a passage way and opening the ref doors or any size while the stool is occupied....See MoreNeed help with Kitchen Layout

We are also embarking on a similar project--not adding on so much as rearranging, but hoping to get a great, useful finished space. We are actaully opening up our dining room to our kitchen, to make them more connected than they currently are, b/c I think we use it less because of being farther from our kitchen. And we currently have an eat-in kitchen, and we are forgoing that, for a large island, and will use our DR table for seated meals. My planned layout is very similar to yours--an L-shape with sink on the short end of the L. But I am not putting any uppers on the sink wall, so that I can have windows out to my backyard (very important with all the kids!) I insisted on having an island big enough to seat us all--and we are a family of 6. But breakfast and lunch are just 5 at most, bc my husband is off to work already. So, my island will be a minimum of 108". I also have no pantry, but am having a 5' wall of 12" deep full height cabinets, to use as pantry storage. If I were you, I'd consider removing the pantry, making the island longer, and maybe putting some 12" deep cabinets in the area where you have the pantry planned. And I also plan to put in a prep sink, in the island, I think. Then the far sink will be the clean-up sink, but the island sink will be the prep sink. I haven't gotten down to the nitty-gritty of my kitchen plan just yet, but I feel like this layout will function well for our family in our space... I think the layout is fine. Comments (16)Good luck! BTW, is the exterior door 36" including trim? 30" with 3" trim? If 36", and the trim wasn't included in their plan, the cabinets between the range and fridge could be reduced to 24" upper and 27" base.. Also, I just remembered that, in your previous thread, we discussed moving the DW to the left side of the sink, if the door on the right didn't open to the DR. Since it's to the exterior, I'd tell them to flip the DW. If you choose the 42" drawer base, it would be close enough to the range for storage of large pots. And, if groceries are being brought in that door, you have a nice landing space on the island, as lisa_a had suggested. Another thought--if there is space between the cabinets and the door trim on the left, you might consider pulling the bottom cabinets on the sink run out to 27". That would give you another 3" of counter and landing space in front of the tall cabinets, and if you can have bases custom made, they could have deeper drawers. Comments (17)Pipdog -Our island is 7 long x 6 wide, in a 25 long x 19 wide space (Kitchen, eating nook). It has seating for 5 (usually 4), prep sink, triple trash, cutting board cabinet, two drawer banks, and a big storage cabinet underneath (the sink vents in this cabinet). Extremely functional! We sit 2 at the front, 2 at the side; much better than 4 seats in a row. (The front of the island has a curve in it, too). Can you use DH's island hybrid idea, but make the seating area on two sides, or do you need the island storage on the other side?...See Moreherbflavor
