Work horse hostas!

I had a few work horses in the garden this year, still looking great in August! The first is Rainforest Sunrise. It is in a pot and gets about four hours of morning sun, great color.
Does anyone else have any bulletproof hostas this season? Let's see them!

Comments (15)Heather, I'm relieved to find out that diatomaceous earth does not harm earthworms. It makes sense that DE would last in the soil for decades, since fossils don't decay quickly, but the directions tell us to renew the application following rain or watering. Hmmm. That wouldn't be just so we'll buy more DE, would it?? Safer's Slug and Snail Bait works for me, too. Don't know why I forgot to mention it in an earlier post. Probably because I don't see the gratifyingly instant results that I do with ammonia. I used to go slug hunting, late at night, armed with a flashlight, long-handled tweezers and a bucket of boiling water. (I'm surprised the neighbours never called the police! I must have looked quite suspicious!!) I'd pluck the beasts off my plants and watch them disintegrate when I dropped each one into the bucket. I knew the water needed reheating whenever I saw slugs start to escape up the sides. After a night of hunting, I disposed of the carcasses in the back alley, so the birds would have a feast the next day. Once, however, I guess the water had cooled off too much by the time I had caught the last batch for the night. I threw the slug water into the back alley and went to bed. The next day, my DH went to the alley for some reason, and he soon called me over. Not only had many slugs survived the "hot" bath, but all of them were crawling back towards my yard!!! Comments (15)The cookies are rugelach... I just got back from my brothers house. The casserole is my non traditional take on egg barley and mushrooms. I use orzo because it just comes out creamier. Lots and lots of sauteed celery and about a pound and a half of fresh mushrooms cooked down with seasoning and butter, then all baked together. Super easy and always loved by all. Thanks for all the sweet wishes. I am so enjoying my kitchen... it just never gets , I'm not sure how to express this... expected? I'm amazed daily by how very much I love cooking and living in this little house. And so very grateful that I found this forum 4 years or so ago because I never ever would have had a space that functions so perfectly for how we choose to live. What a life blessing!!! Comments (3)OMG, I was just commenting on these to my husband yesterday, and I actually mentioned them on a thread about annuals last week. My grandmother always had wax begonias in the planter boxes on her deck railing, and I never really liked them. This past spring I waited waaaaayyyy too long to get out to the nursery to get my annuals (this miserable virus and all) and when I got there the nursery was wiped out. So were the next two garden centers. Except for some pink and white wax begonias (and lots of impatiens which I won't buy now). So, I picked up a few scraggly petunias, some scrawny geraniums, sweet potato vine (which always is a rock star) and yes, lots and lots of wax begonias. Well!! These. Things. Are. Awesome. I cannot believe how they have gotten huge and are so healthy and lush looking. Constantly in bloom, pretty much self-cleaning, healthy as all get-out, and just non-stop beauty. The petunias pooped out, the geraniums are meh, but the wax begonias are just phenomenal. And... I even planted them in a planter I haven't used in almost ten years - and yes, I am admitting it - in the same soil that was still in it, lol. I was also desperately short of potting soil this season, so I scraped off the hard stuff on top and put like three trowels full of fresh stuff (and cheap stuff at that, waiting too long to get out again) and mixed it in, and the begonias still are the stars of the patio. I still can't say that I *love* the blooms, but I love the overall effect of them, they way they have performed, and their reliability. When I think of what has been bullet proof in my garden, then the gold medal has to go to Blue Cadet. It is in a pot in the ground---and a small one at that! It went from 13 eyes last year to 30 this year. It even gave me a seedling. It confirmed for me that generally hostas will do much better in a pot that is too small for them rather than one that is too large. But now it definitely needs a repot. And there's lots of seeds.
