An attractive, fast growing shrub, growing to 10' tall and 8-10' wide giving it upright oval to oval-rounded. The very waxy foliage is dark green above and felt gray beneath, 2-4" long, elliptic-lanceolate, and semi-evergreen. Flower buds are flat and pink, opening to pinkish-white, slightly fragrant 3-6" cymes in May. Fruit is red, changing to shiny black but very sparse to non-existent. Severe leaf burn but no stem or bud damage at -17�. The evergreen foliage makes it an excellent screening plant while the very waxy leaves and fine texture lends its use as an accent plant. The growth extensions are very vigorous and need to be pruned to achieve density. It can be easily trimmed as a formal hedge and I have been told of pragense being sheared as a capitata yew at a cemetery in downtown Kansas City. the problem with doing it online.. is that the pictures will not be blooming in sync with the actual plant ... what i was getting at.. was that when you lack a name ... just shop the 'timing' of the actual flower ... it never fails to amaze me.. how ... e.g. .. every forsythia for 20 miles around.. will all bloom within days of each other.. and if you saw some weird yellow flowering bush.. and happened to stop in the nursery.. it wouldnt take long to figure out what it is.. besides the person there might know since he drove thru the same area on the way to work .... believe it or not.. there are things where the web fails ... lol ... ken

Yes, it's Viburnum tinus. They are extremely common in my area and with such a long bloom season, they are particularly noticeable. And while I personally don't detect an unpleasant aroma - scents are very subjective - I've heard them described as smelling like anything from old sweat socks to week old garbage to paperwhite narcissus! The species is reputed to be self-incompatible and requires another seedling or clone for good fruit set. 'Spring Bouquet' (syn. 'Compactum') tends to be the most common cultivar in my area, has the dark red buds shown in the photo and generally stays right around the size noted, so very likely the plants in question are this selection. FWIW, I've frequently seen hedges of V.t. 'Spring Bouquet' full of dark, nearly black berries so there's no reason to assume multiples of the same cultivar won't provide adequate cross pollination. Also, I've never seen the berries favored by any particular wildlife and they do tend to be rather inconspicuous as well.....this is not a Viburnum I'd put at the top of my list for berry effect.

what kind of soaker hose... anything engineered.. or just that common recycled tire stuff?? ... the problem with the latter is that it can become problematic on hills ... with age ... etc ... i learned this.. when the last plant one the line wasnt getting properly watered ... there simply wasnt water pressure down at the end of the line .... anyway ... how it all works.. in your location.. with your soil ... can only be discovered by you and your finger.. or a small hand shovel ... dig holes around your plants.. and FIND OUT how the water is moving thru your soil ... when i installed an engineered drip system in my sand... i spent a lot of time.. digging holes to find out how it all worked in my sand ... no one else could tell me how it all worked ... ken
