Hello, are there any artists out there?
Comments (41)Oh, i wish I had seen this thread before posting a similar request on another. Last year a strong wind came through and snapped off the entire top of a gorgeous pine tree in my front yard. This left me with a 22' (apx) standing trunk (no branches), that is about 2.5 feet thick, which I cannot bear take down. I am wondering if there is something I can do to make this tall standing trunk into something a little more attractive. I was thinking maybe I could slice (? with a chain saw???) it down from the top to aboout 2 feet and then outward to make a sort of throne with an extremely tall back, maybe even paint the inside with something attractive. Or, maybe I could make it look like a living tree again placing a potted bush on top of this tall trunk. Is there some kind of big bushy plant like that which would survive a NW winter? Or maybe something fanciful like topping it with some kind of fake palm frons or fake willow branches. Of course whatever it is ,it would have to withstand cold winters with snow and survive on natural perception for water (or be fake). Or, maybe put a steel rod through it and hand a couple swings??? Has anyone ever done something like this? I'd really love to keep the tree trunk if I can make it a little more appealing to look at. Ideas from all artists are welcomed and appreciated :-) Wendy only@wildwendyworld.com...See MoreDry Creek needs to finished. Any ideas on artistic landscapers?
Comments (8)Photos must be stored online at a hosting site. I like Photobucket since they store up to 5 gigs for free. It is difficult to post the command line for posting here since the computer recognizes it as a picture but, it is: greater than symbol "" The only spaces are between img and src=. I can move up to 500 pound boulders into place without equipment however, if we have access we can do a much faster job with a bobcat and small excavator. Any damage done by equipment is easily repaired by hand after stone placement is completed. The first photo shows an English style wall without mortar. The stones are simply stacked properly with a solid base and gravity does the rest. I also live in Marietta so it's no big deal to come over to take a look. I do not charge for estimates however, if you require a design (and I have landscape software for this) I do charge for the time to design and implement plant choices. Usually around $250-$500 depending on scale of the project. I use a program that allows me to take an actual photo of the area and install stones, plants and hardscape items as needed. I can also produce overhead designs as well. If you would like to discuss this further please click on my name and follow the link to my email. Comments (38)Jemdandy, funny you should mention Donna Dewberry. The woman is practically a conglomerate! She's really done well with her "One-Stroke" technique. I have some of her brushes and a couple of her books, but never put in the time necessary to master it. I'm a little ambivalent about the look; that could be part of it. I watched her in action for the first time the other night on TV and was impressed, though. Surprised to see her sit down at the sewing machine after painting. I didn't know she was a quilter. Susan, I'd be a quilter if I hadn't discovered rug hooking. Once I did, I gave up embroidery, needlepoint, and everything else. :-) I've done some enamel painting on wine glasses and martini glasses and assorted glass dishes, etc. Would eventually like to do more decorative painting with acrylics. GW has a nice Decorative Painting forum. As for watercolors, I'm so well-equipped that I'll feel consumed with guilt if I don't give it a good try. I've been using AC Moore and Michael's coupons to acquire brushes, paints, and paper, plus a professional illustrator recently gave me watercolor brushes and some fabulous French papers. I'm saving the latter until I know what I'm doing. I found some decent 140-lb. watercolor paper at Ollie's Bargains--cheap because it's slightly bent. It'll be perfect for my practice strokes. This thread has me psyched! It's exciting to see the art and read the encouraging posts. And the Wet Canvas site threatens to completely undermine my already shaky housekeeping....See MoreSpecial gift for niece/nephew wedding - any ideas?
