Walkway pavers replacement inspiration - & how to convince DH...
Comments (32)I've been following this thread with interest because my DH and I have been having the same argument for years. He has the fireplace at the top of his list and I have about 10 projects above it on my list. I love your bricks, but do think they need to be cleaned up at bit (not the moss - love that). If you're going to keep them as they are, I would dig out the edges and lay landscape ties on either side to create a more distinct border. It also helps when gardening by creating a bit of a raised bed (easier to add compost, mulch, etc). Last summer, I did away with our old walkway which looked much like yours except it was ugly interlocking brick with grass growing in it instead of charming moss. I pulled up all the old bricks and laid them on the front boulevard with a for sale sign and they were gone quickly. The base they had been laid on was still in pretty good shape, I just bought bags of quarter down limestone from home depot and spread it over top. I bought new stones using my airmiles points and, voila!, I had a brand new sidewalk. I think the stones and all materials cost about $700 total. My neighbours got the exact same stretch of walkway done professionally and it cost them $2500. It took me about a week and by the end of it, I had the best toned arms (and walkway) on the block. Awm03, I would love to see pics and have details on your fireplace insert....See MoreArtistic Pavers - Shellock or Stonelock
Comments (15)Mine were just installed a few months ago, and I am having rust spots as well. Also having discoloration in the joint lines after the pavers get wet. Overall, so far I regret not going with travertine. They also stain super easy. Got mud on a few spots and I have tried multiple things, even bleach, and cannot remove the stain from the mud even though we washed off very soon. Also, the lines from the intall are off because some pavers are not exact size, so I have gaps in them (waiting on paver install company to fix). My neighbors travertine has such a clean look installed, you don't see the gaps like you do with these because of the beveled edges. Lastly, they are just as slippery as travertine....See MoreCost range (installed) for pavers and type suggestions?
Comments (11)I'm a Landscape Designer/contractor in upstate New York. We also offer consultation services to DIYer's If you really want to be prepared for the actual cost of any of these projects figure 3-3.5 times the actual cost of the materials. This has been a standard for years. A lot of less reputable contractors leave out items and add them on in the end. I think a lot of these costs being thrown around leave out items like site prep work, machinery, etc. Those costs can vary tremendously. Any installation like this in New York, with Winters like ours, require at a minimum of a tamped 4-6 inch aggregate base to give the install longevity against heaving. Concrete needs to be 4' thick minimum and reinforced with appropriate expansion joints. Examples in this area: Base pavers: 15-16.00 installed. Concrete pads, sidewalks etc. 13-14.00 installed. Bluestone/flagstone 18-23 per square foot installed. Decking with wood, 27-35 per sq, up to around 40 with composite. If your getting costs less than that here, you are contracting with a fly by night. Things to always ,always, always, look for are a while considering a contractor are a written contract, references, insurance, including workman's comp. and an extensive portfolio. Don't count on the guy who mows lawns down the street to be equally competent in construction otherwise you may end up being a candidate for an episode of 'Holmes on Homes'. www.hudsonvalleylandscaper.com . Comments (26)We always park our vehicles in the garage unless we run home really quick to grab something before leaving again so I never thought much about delivery drivers whacking into our cars. I guess that's a good point to consider. Do you have the option of doing a curved sidewalk to the front door instead of just a straight runway? I was thinking something like having it start where you've drawn it, then at some point midway it curves to the left (creating a rounded flowerbed area between the sidewalk and driveway) and then have it curve back toward your front porch (and leave it connecting to the driveway near the garage doors like you've drawn it). I don't know if you have enough property in the left of the photo to make a curve look good or if it would look too squished, but it's an option to consider. I do think if you want a straight-shot sidewalk like that, you should leave a minimum of 3-4' in between the sidewalk and driveway for landscaping. Anything closer than that comes across as looking like an afterthought/diy job....See MoreRevolutionary Gardens
