The small tree has some resemblance to Prunus lusitanica but ones here - where it is a weed - are not as glossy and I don't think the slight zigzag of the shoots is liable to be seen either. Many more kinds of broad-leaved evergreens can be grown there than here, it might be something superficially similar but actually different. The larger tree I think will turn out to be a Comarostaphylis. It is certainly not an Arbutus.

Okay, I'm going to upset the apple cart here and give another possibility for this hosta. It does indeed look like an immature Liberty, and it could very well be just that. However, it also looks very much like Twilight. It's difficult to determine from the picture what the size of the plant is, or the plant habit. Liberty is, like it's parent plant Sagae, a vase shaped, upright hosta, and the leaves tend to grow at a more horizontal angle than Twilight. It is also a much larger plant at maturity. Twilight is more of a mounding hosta, although it is slightly upright as well. It's leaves tend to angle more than those on Liberty. So, a couple of questions to see if we can determine what this lovely plant should be labeled. How large is the clump at this time? Is the plant habit very upright, or more mounding? Perhaps most importantly, where was it purchased? Liberty wasn't in any of the box stores 3-4 years ago, but Twilight has been sold at WalMart and other box stores for quite a number of years. It may not be possible to determine which hosta this is until it reaches maturity, which for Liberty would be around 6-7 years. Twilight will reach it's mature height in 3-5 years, but will throw divisions and spread out much more quickly that Liberty.

Some folks at North Carolina State University's department of Entomology developed "a freaky tag-team of bugs" to eat kudzu, the vine that ate the South. Where I used to live, I watched a car parked at a garage get covered in kudzu in a matter of a couple weeks--it's beautiful, but it's the most aggressive plant I've ever seen. They didn't want the caterpillar to go nuts eating everything else, though, so they infected their caterpillars with an organic time bomb--wasp larvae in their backs which would eat them from the inside out. I'm not sure those are actually eggs, Bo. Try pulling one off the leaf and see if part of the leaf comes along - if it does, slice it open with a razor blade and see if it is plant material with a little hollow down the center. If so, it is a leaf spindle gall, a sort of tumor produced by a tiny mite as a home that can provide a safe hiding and feeding place. The picture is not clear enough for me to be sure, though - check it out. Tucker
