Comments (7)I just replaced my 1995 Super Recycler with the Toro Super Bagger (20197). To me, the name is more of a marketing gimmick, as it mows and mulches just fine. I bought it because of it's high dome deck, Honda motor, 5 year warranty, blade stop and my local dealer gave me a bit of a price break. I mow about 1/2 an acre and have young kids, so I am constantly pausing to move junk out of the way, so the blade stop feature is nice. I have been very impressed with the mower. It mulches great, starts easily, has plenty of power, and the personal pace works well. Reviews for this mower are very positive. I view this one as a bit of a sleeper, overshadowed by the Super Recycler....See Morelawnmower horsepower
Comments (3)sax - May I respectfully disagree with just a little of what you said? I'm not sure that the lawsuit is so frivolous only in the respect that most parties involved intentionally or unintentionally misled the buying public. I know that certain 190cc engines at one point were rated between 5.5HP all the way up to 6.75 HP. Was the consumer really getting an increase in HP of 1.25 HP for their money when they stepped up to the higher HP? Seems unlikely. The engine still had the same displacement (190cc), same RPM (3200) although maybe slightly different air cleaners, but could that possibly lead to a 23% (from 5.5 to 6.75)increase in power? I doubt it (please note for the record I said 'doubt' because I've never tested them on a dyno, so maybe it could happen, I guess.) Horsepower is calculated as torque x rpm divided by 5,252. That means today's engines rated at 6.75 TP have a horsepower of 3.93. By the way, if you're keeping track at home, the rpms are set at 3,060 to get to the TP rating, at least that's what it says on the engine label. That's 3.93HP vs a labeled (prior to 2007) 6.75HP. That's a difference of 72%. OK, I'll back off the hard stance for one minute. I agree that if everyone used the same standard, even if the measurement of the standard is open to a little interpretation, it's good for the consumer because they can compare and contrast the power of different engines. I think the problem is that there was simply TOO much interpretation of those standars and a liberal application of rating methodologies. I mean really, why would someone rate an engine at an RPM which that engine, in it's application, would never, ever reach? That's like me telling someone I weigh 195lbs knowing I'd have to diet and exercise for two months and lose 60lbs... but I COULD get there. OK, maybe not the best analogy, but my wife keeps reminding me... I know less about the car HP problems, so I do not doubt what you say there. I really don't mean to start problems or aim to point blame at any of the listed parties, but it sure would be nice to get back to one standard that all the engines could accurately be measured against. Tough to sell any other way, right?...See MoreCraftsman Lawnmower Won't Stay Running Part 2
Comments (69)Tecumseh with plastic bowl - if it is flooding, at the bottom of the bowl on the side is a screw. Remove that and inside is a plastic piece, this meters the flow of fuel and if missing can explain flooding. Also carb is extruded aluminum and there is a small hole drilled in it for the bowl to breath, that could be the other cause. Lastly dirt is holding the carb needle open- hold the carb bowl in your hand off the carb and let the gas flow in and see if the bowl overflows while outside the carb. If it only runs for a sec, upon removing the screw from the bowl the plastic piece inside - get a drill and drill it just a hair larger - so far this personaly worked for me 3 for 3 of these. Do this after trying cleaning it out the same piece with a paperclip. Sorry all if parts of my post are a repeat. ihwall50- black smoke, too much gas from dirty air filter, try banging the filter on the street curb knocking dirt loose and try again. if it improves, get a new filter....See MoreJD losing power
Comments (4)Sounds as if the problem was there before you changed the filter to one that is a little loose in the line? If so, probably not the original problem, but could be an additional one. I would start by swapping out the old fuel line and adding a "correct" filter (lots of stories here about wrong filters causing engines to lose power like yours does). In fact, I change fuel lines all the way back to tank by the time the machine is as old as yours (1989) even if they look OK - fuel line deteriorates from the inside so you don't see it happening. After that, if you still have the problem, I'd check the fuel tank vent (in cap?) to be sure you are not building a vacuum in fuel system as you run. It does sound like a fuel starvation issue to me. I had a very similar issue for a couple of years with a 1986 JD 165/Kawa. After running for around 30 minutes, it would starve out and die, no way to get it restarted until it sat for a little while and then it would start right up and run great for another 30 minutes or so. After new fuel lines, new pump, new everything I could thing of, I finally found the culprit inside the gas tank. There was an accumulation of very fine "hair" inside the tank, sort of like a hair ball. As the fuel was drawn, it would suck this hair ball tight against the intake for the fuel and eventually starve it. However, when the vacuum stopped, the hair would re-expand like a springy sponge, and that would allow freer fuel flow again when restarted. My local JD dealer said he had only seen this once before, and blamed it on something like spider webs getting into the fuel can that I used to refuel, probably over the winter when it would sit empty in the barn. In any case, whatever I had was impervious to sittitng in gas - never seemed to get softer and stay tightly balled on the intake. Fortunately, I did all of teh tinkering myself, otherwise I would have gone broke with dealer service charges to chase it....See Morefarmboy1
