Update on Al's goldfish plant in Vietnam
Comments (11)Do a tiny little soft pinch right at the tip, Xuan... it will help make the plant bushy, instead of long and lanky. I promise it won't hurt the plant, at all! I pinch my Mums and Coleus every year, several times, to keep the plants growing bushy. I pinch Mums at about 3 week intervals, maybe 3 or 4 times during the summer, and that's what makes them look so nicely rounded with tons of buds! Pinching the Coleus keeps flower bracts from forming too quickly, and keeps the plants nice and leafy looking! Commercial growers pinch many different types of plants to get them to branch out or stay shorter, or to make them produce more flower buds... Mums, Zonal Geraniums, Poinsettias... all pinched at least a few times before the buyer gets them! Well... I think I may be too old to have Xuan as a Granny, being a Granny myself, but I will definitely agree that she's a wonderful, sweet person, and I'm glad to have her as a friend... we met over on the Hippeastrum Forum last fall! LOL! It sure is a small world! I'll go back to the Houseplant Forum when I have more time... I did pop in and write a bit, but I could have done better, I'm sure! Have a great day!...See MoreWANTED: Wanted: Goldfish Plant

Comments (3)Yep, it looks like two different plants allright! I'm not good with Nematanthus names--you might do better on the Gesneriad forum, tho' it's slower than this one. Or you could look at pictures on sites like Rob's Violets and Kartuz Greenhouses--others too....See MoreWanted: Low Light plants that my goldfish will not eat
Comments (2)For a low light plant that Goldies won't touch, I don't think you can beat Java Fern, that also does well in cold water tanks, but don't use fishing line to tie them to logs. I learned the hard way that the lines eventually stretch and create a deadly trap for fish. It took some web searching, but I found large, SS staples and used them to fasten the fern stems to rootwood logs and ended up with a nice little forest of them in my 130 winter Wakin tank. They are currently sitting on the bottom of a 3 ft. deep, black walled, 350 gal. watering trough/fish tank, where they receive very little light and are doing fine. Fixing java fern to logs also allows easy cleaning, even if you keep gravel in the tank, as you can just lift them, ferns and all, then plop them back down. I usually remove the logs and rinse them and the ferns under running water when I clean the tank, to remove any crud that had accumulated under them. However, it takes patience to grow Java Fern. They are hardy and given mimimum care will last forever, but are very slow growing. You are unlikely to find them in any LPS, but most internet aquatic plant sellers have them. If you feel impatient and are willing to pop for instant masses of green, indulge, and buy what growers describe as "mother plants." Large, but pricey....See More- 7 years ago
