Why are strawberry seeds so hard to find?
Comments (8)It's been a long time since I grew strawberries from seeds, but I remember starting them in January and not getting any strawberries at all until midsummer, with most plants not producing significant fruit until the next year. That's a lot of time in a heated environment at the start and a long wait for a crop, and that's with alpine strawberries (Alexandria)that come true from seed. (And that's not counting any fertilizer or pest control during that long pre-productive period, somethat that a commercial grower can't ignore.) I think most commercial varieties don't come true, so it's sort of like growing hybrid tea roses from seed -- a long time to see results and you don't know whether you'll like what you get. If I get the drift of the linked article, it seems that you can't just cross two varieties and get a consistent or predictable result. Because a lot of the genetic interaction is unpredictable -- not a simple adding of best traits or simple dominance, but what they call 'epistatic.' If I read correctly, they say that the way to get desirable strawberry plants is to make crosses, grow them out, and then establish the good ones as asexually-propogated new strains: 'The important factor to stress when epistasis is important, and when the material can be vegetatively propagated, is the need to identify superior genotypes immediately and maintain them in the population by asexual reproduction.' But frankly, whenever a scientific paper -- like this one -- starts using the Greek alphabet, I figure I'm in over my head and I'd appreciate someone else chiming in. Here is a link that might be useful: Strawberry genetics...See MoreWhy is milkweed so hard to find locally?
Comments (16)WOW! Thanks for all of the great replies everyone! gardenspider - I posted my zone on this topic as DFW. I guess I assumed everyone knew that was Dallas/Fort Worth...lol. Thanks for the great info by the way! brandon7 - I was at HD yesterday and didn't see a thing. Perhaps I'll call around to a few in the area since they don't all stock the same things. Were they in the perennials section? nancy86 - If I don't find any this weekend, I'll get your email address and send you a SASE next week. Thanks for the great offer! Well, I picked up my tropical milkweed and am a bit disappointed in how it looks. It's got three tall (around 1.5-2' stalks) with just a few leaves on the very top portions. I expected it to be full all the way down, so not many leaves for the monarchs. Hopefully I can find some of the swamp milkweed at HD to add to this bed. By the way, I'm completely redoing this bed and could use some advice. Here is what I plan to plant: Ends - One end has a huge deep pink butterfly bush, the other end has a potted duranta (on the edge of my patio). Back - I plan to plant the milkweeds on one side and some summer phlox on the other (bought 2 of the John Fanick tonight). I also have one purple liatris that I'll put somewhere in the back or middle section. Middle section - so far I have two verbena bonariensis, two purple cone flowers and one black-eyed susan (will center that one since it's the only non-pink/purple in this bed) Front - deep pink (almost red) pentas and a few small other annuals to fill between. I have a hard time deciding where to put everything because almost everything is small right now, and since I've never planted these, I don't really know how they grow. I know I can always move them around later if I need to. Thanks again for all of the great advice!...See MoreTampa Bay area nurseries - mix/sell a decent bulk potting mix?
Comments (20)I'm not sure what you have in mind for using the potting soil exactly, but I have my own special mix made that I use for my rare cycads. With plants that are worth what these are worth, getting the best soil is well worth the extra money. You mentioned drainage, well, that is the most important thing in growing cycads. That, and having a mix that doesn't break down real fast and get mucky over time. Also, I don't want insects getting in my mix (ants and termites love pine bark)and I don't want my pH to go acid in a year. My mix is mainly Canadian peat, well point sand (very coarse sand, almost small rock)I do use cypress saw dust and also perlite. If you can't find anything good, I am 2 minutes off I-4 in Lakeland and have my soil professionally made for me by a place that has a computer mixing it and I buy 30 yards at a time. If you are just wanting to put up some things, I could spare 1/2 a yard or something like that....See MoreSingle Electric Wall Oven: WHY is it so hard to find a good one?
Comments (30)Although it seems a tangent, bear with me: I recently purchased a stick blender for my mother's birthday, the one I gave her years ago having bitten the proverbial dust. I started research on Amazon, only to find similar sorts of problems with this small appliance as those outlined in the original post here, i.e. so many brands either got glowing reviews or horror stories for the very same product. Quality seemed to be a roll of the dice, no matter how much you paid. I finally chose a popular brand, knowing that the blender could suddenly tank, but also knowing that reviewers said the customer service was outstanding. So, if we're left with mediocrity from the more accessible electric wall oven brands (like Bosh or Electrolux vs the costy Wolf), which have been most responsive when people have had a problem? Kitchenaid seems to have failed roundly in this respect over the past few years, so even if they've solved their problems, they aren't the brand for me.
