What do you use to line your kitchen compost bin?
Comments (28)nygardener said: "I tried those bio bags or eco bags for a while, still have some in the cabinet, but found that they didn't degrade quickly. Weeks later I'd see the bag still intact in the compost heap. They may be good for municipal collection but not for backyard composting." I used those bio bags for a while back in 2006 or 2007, and I'm still finding relatively intact pieces in the pile. Granted I run a cold pile that's slower than many, but I've still gotten plenty of good compost out of it. I just keep throwing the green bio bag pieces back into the beginning pile. The bio bags were convenient for carrying the scraps out to the pile, but I might just as well have used plastic bags. Now I'm trying to figure out what I can do with the unused roll I have under the sink. Claire...See MoreWhere do you keep your vermicompost bin?
Comments (4)I gave up my worms, but when I had them, I kept them in a Rubbermaid bin on the north side of the house in the shade. Maybe you will get over hating worms because it's so wonderful to see the work they do. You know you can buy bags of worm compost, right? But this is such an Earth-friendly project (less water in the garbage disposal, recycling of food scraps), I commend you for doing it. Maybe I should start up again. What are you using for bedding?...See Morehow often do you check your bin?
Comments (6)I also raise Euros, my experience has been that the more i root around in the bain the more crispies i find the next morning. They arent quite as tolerant as other species to being disturbed. I also am running an experiment bin with regualra nightcrawlers. They also do not tolerate too much disruption. I can usually fin enough in the top 3-4 inches of my bins to satisfy anyones curiousity, so when asked that is about all the bedding i move around. Most of the info ive read says that red wigglers are more tolerant to being disrupted. So i guess it basically comes down to which species you are raising. Bryan...See MoreMiele DW. Comments (22)Love ours. As others have said, it makes for a lot more room on the bottom rack, makes unloading easier and more sanitary, and the cutlery gets cleaner than it ever did in a basket. I think it's a very efficient way of getting the flatware clean. It's less fussy than it seems to load the flatware into slots, and the ability to grab a bunch of spoons by their stems and toss 'em into the drawer later makes up for the time spent on the front end--and the time spent isn't significant. If space isn't an issue for you, then you can toss them in willy nilly and they'll still get clean--nothing nests on the top rack, the way it used to in the silverware basket. However, if I use the slots, I can get nearly every piece of flatware I have in there. I also like it for long spoons and other things that didn't really have a spot in the old dishwasher. That said, it's apparently not for everyone. There are those that see it and think it would be great (as I did) and those that shake their heads and say "no way". To each their own.
