What's your pile/bin/whatever look like today?
Comments (10)I most recently built the pile about 9 days ago. I shredded all the yard waste (tomato vines, etc) and got some coffee grounds to add, too. I added a teeny bit of cow poop, and kitchen waste. The bin was half to 2/3 full. Before our cold nights, a week ago, it reached 150 in the center. This was 2 - 3 days after building it up. Then our freezing nights hit (about thursday or friday). I expected it to stay pretty warm, but it didn't. So I turned it a couple days ago, figuring it wouldn't hurt. Your thread prompted me to check, and although it's too cold and damp out for me to find the thermometer, I did poke the fork in and see plenty of steam come out. We still having freezing nights and snow will come down to 1500 feet tonight. So I'm happy enough....See MoreWhat do you use to line your kitchen compost bin?

Weeks later I'd see the bag still intact in the compost heap. They may be good for municipal collection but not for backyard composting." I used those bio bags for a while back in 2006 or 2007, and I'm still finding relatively intact pieces in the pile. Granted I run a cold pile that's slower than many, but I've still gotten plenty of good compost out of it. I just keep throwing the green bio bag pieces back into the beginning pile. The bio bags were convenient for carrying the scraps out to the pile, but I might just as well have used plastic bags. Now I'm trying to figure out what I can do with the unused roll I have under the sink. Claire...See MoreDo you break your nails on bin/cup pulls?
Comments (9)Thanks everyone for telling me I needn't be worried about breaking my nails. And, kateskouros, my nails are pretty darn short, but when my hand slips on something, they tend to break easily down to the quick, which is painful. But, like I said, I am just extremely clumsy and tend to grab at things quickly, resulting in broken nails. I think it is the thought of grabbing something from underneath, rather than through the top of a handle that has me thinking I'll be always breaking them. What I should do is go to a kitchen showroom and try them out, maybe slathering my hands in hand lotion first :)...See MoreDo You Fix This For Any of Your Meals and Do You Like It?
Comments (30)if I don't have green beans from the garden...occasionally I'll throw in a can of mushroom soup...I would dare do that to my freshly canned green beans.... Mary it must be nice to have fresh food at every meal...I wish I had the time or the love of cooking to do that...I guess without people like me...that aisle at the grocery store would be a thing of the past!...See Moresmm5525
