Panda Plant?
Comments (3)I don't know the name but we have it in our greenhouses and have propagated it. It's super easy to grow from leaf cuttings. Just pull off a leaf and stick the bottom of it in some soil. In about 6-8 weeks it should have roots and start putting up new leaves shortly after...See MoreKalanchoe tomentosa leaf broken off
Comments (11)David It will not grow a new leaf exactly in same spot where the old one was, it will leave a 'bump' on the stem (you can see some 'bumps' on the stem, where leaves fell off, in the photo I posted); but new leaves could grow anywhere on the stump - below, above or next to where previous leaf was. I think plant decides on that... If you keeping it inside over the winter & can keep outside in warm enough weather (like now), make sure you first put it in shadier spot & slowly move into more & more sun. It will grow more compact in full sun, have better coloration. Not sure if it will flower, I never had any blooms on mine (own it for abt. 5yrs.-I think they don't bloom that often, maybe in their natural habitat). If needs to be inside, put it in sunniest window you have available. Can you post photo of your plant? Comments (14)Hi Mighty Metis and Spapa, Hope bruce is doing great again (not the best picture - its neighbour is a stone rose I'm keeping there to get a big bigger before repotting) I'm writing because I think I'm heading towards a similar situation with my panda. A break-off branch was given to me recently by an acquaintance, I planted it just before summer, it really transformed around 3 weeks later (spreading its leaves, growing very fast) but now I see the lower stem getting darker, greyish and loosing density, it looks like its drying out. I presume the roots are also affected by rot possibly. I certainly planted it into unsuitable soil for succulents, the weather went from very hot to very dry constantly and I also planted it into a terracotta pot (I think it retains too much moisture with the wrong soil mix). I'm watering every three days once the top soil dries out in a hot and humid room. If you guys can see this post, I'd much appreciate a knowledgeable glance and comment, as I'm not sure what's happening here....See MoreCutting up a Panda Plant
Comments (6)Thanks for the responses! I’m hoping to save this plant. Good to hear that they root easily. Yes, I did go ahead and cut the plant up. Got rid of all of the old soil too. Now I have a few independent stems and a bit of what’s left of the old base hanging out: Nik: you say that I should not let the stems that already have roots callous over for too long (or those roots won’t be viable?). I think I cut this up a few days ago, and am letting the cuttings sit in partial sun. Are the roots going to die if I let it sit too long? I assume callous time is about two weeks, though upon inspection they certainly seem calloused over. Maybe I should go ahead and plant them now? This is all being done indoors, and is not that humid, especially since the A/C is running; the average temperature outside this month is about 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and I have large windows that makes my apartment hot; inside it's about 72 though the plants get lots and lots of afternoon and evening sun (west facing windows). I also have supplemental plant lights for cloudy days. Nik: I’m curious about what you say about letting it form roots unpotted. I have seen leaves form roots unpotted, but not stems. Will this guy form roots by itself or should I pot it? It is the old top of the plane and has been callousing over for almost two weeks now: Also, if it helps, I have root hormone I can use when potting. Thanks!!!!...See Moresocks
