Kalanchoe tomentosa leaf broken off

Hi all, I am just wondering, when the leaf is broken in half on succulents, and in this case my panda plant, does the broken part heal and grow back, or not likely?
Also, what are the chances for panda plants to flower during this time of the year?

The broken edge will callus over; the missing part of the leaf will not grow back.

Ah I see, would it be a better idea to take that leaf off and try to propagate then? I heard kalanchoes are quite easy to propagate from leaves.

Found one at Ikea of all places, bought it, brought it home, checked it out, no visible signs of problems, potted it, kept it about a month, checked plants last nite when i watered my foliage plants and everything seemed fine w/ all my succulents and today i walked in and it was broken in half. i pulled as many leaves as i could and put into dry soil. i noticed several places on the plant had a single white root looking protrusion so i made sure when i started tending to the plant that those areas came into contact w/ dry soil. i *LOVE* this plant and my heart sank and my day was darkened when i saw it laying in 2 pieces. any ideas why the plant could simply break in half? stem wasn't soft, didn't look weak and in fact i had to finish "tearing" the break off because fibrous connections were still in-tact. anything i should look for? advice on how to best propagate from leaves? i've had *zero* luck propagating anything from leaves...everything i've tried to root from leaves has dried up or molded away. should i slice them, let them dry out first or just put in or on dry soil? i have planted the top part of the plant in dry succulent soil mix so that any of the root like protrusions could act as roots, put 10 leaves in dry succulent mix, and after checking the roots of the plant looking for disease, i re-potted it to see what will happen. any advice would be appreciated. i love fuzzy plants and this one just looks so sad leaves leaves laying in rows in soil rather than upright and happy. i can take pix if you wish but all the leaves are dirty now because i've layed them on/in soil.

First I have to appologize for the bad thing I did (stole some babies from a greenhouse, they were on the floor so I figured they would just get crushed anyway) But, to your question, I just placed them on top of soil and water them when dried out. They are thriving and growing very well. They do not need to be attatched to leaf to grow. They start rooting very quickly. I left the greenhouse with a variety of leaves off of the floor and now I have over 30 little succulent plants growing in bowls. Not pots, styrofoam bowls. I water them very little and most are close to an inch tall already. They are in full sun with 15-20 leaves (plants) per bowl. I did this about 2 months ago and can not wait to see what I actually have! I am bad I know, but I knew that they would grow and that the greenhouse would not mess with trying to save them.

There is still life there :) But possibly some dead and/or rotting stems. It was overwatered as you realized. Your soil looks dark (wet soil looks like that) and quite organic = it will keep wet for too long. If nothing else, get a bag of perlite, sift or rinse it and use it generously mixed with C&S soil. At least 50% of total volume (could be eve more) of perlite. Take plant out, get rid of old soil. Any damaged stems and roots (dry or rotted and broken) should be cut off with sharp knife/blade. Keep healthy leaves, they could grow into new plants. Let cuttings callus for a day or two and prepare new mix. Use pot with drainage holes. Many ppl prefer terracotta, but plastic is just fine. Pot callused cuttings into new mix. Do not water until roots start growing - that is when new growth starts to be visible. Keep out of strong sunlight for about a week or so, and start moving into stronger sunlight every few days. It should do well in good sunlight as long as it is acclimatized to it. Lay leaves on top of the mix. Some may start growing roots and plantlets. Treat them same as cutting (could be all in same pot). These plants (and many other succulents too) will grow air roots - np. Leave them, or cut off if they bother you.

Your plant is severely light starved and I see the leaves dying off at the stem, which means that plant is shedding them. That level of wilting and leaf-death points to a die-off at the roots. It doesn't look like a fungus got in there, it could be that this plant is just too stressed to go on. Panicking over a little rain and then not watering at all for too long probably killed the roots. So long as there is a drainage hole in your pot, rain will not kill succulents. How often were you watering before this? The only succulents that predictably die from overwatering are: many cacti, lithops, stapeliads, euphorbia and a whole lot of fairly exotic species most of us have never even heard of. Yours is not one of those. If this were my plant, I would go for broke and water it well, keeping the soil damp but not soggy for a few days and then watering as soon as it looks dry on top and keeping that grow light all the time during daytime. It will either recover or it won't.

Yes, they easily propagate from leaves, here is a pic (sorry, not so clear) of one of the fallen leaves growing. I just 'beheaded' mine since it's terribly etiolated after this winter...after cut ends callus, I'll pot them up. I left the main stem in the pot, it has roots & hopefully it will grow some babies soon.

You said "the leaf is broken in half" - that will not grow back & not sure if it will sprout a new baby (the broken off part) - if you want new plant, just remove the whole leaf. You can leave it just sitting on top of the soil in the pot, it will grow roots soon.

I had. Broken leaf from a panda plant it was literally broken off towards the middle of the leaf and its sprouting babies as WE speak! - my panda plant is also about to flower any few day's now. On a previous post by jojo (fuzzy plants, or something to THAT name) i got a picture off mine putting OUT its flower stalk, i deleted the picture so can't post it here OR take NEW pics cause I'm working at the moment, but take a look of mine on that post if you'd like.

Oh another question, if I take the leaf off the stem or cut it from where it grows out, is it going to grow another leaf there?

Depends, sometimes it will other times it won't.... i have some that do and others that don't....plant's are tricky like THAT sometimes! But then AGAIN I've had leaves dying at the bottom of the stem grow new plants before the leaf drops, and others growing NEW plant's right between the new leaves that are still healthy!

It will not grow a new leaf exactly in same spot where the old one was, it will leave a 'bump' on the stem (you can see some 'bumps' on the stem, where leaves fell off, in the photo I posted); but new leaves could grow anywhere on the stump - below, above or next to where previous leaf was. I think plant decides on that...
If you keeping it inside over the winter & can keep outside in warm enough weather (like now), make sure you first put it in shadier spot & slowly move into more & more sun. It will grow more compact in full sun, have better coloration. Not sure if it will flower, I never had any blooms on mine (own it for abt. 5yrs.-I think they don't bloom that often, maybe in their natural habitat). If needs to be inside, put it in sunniest window you have available.

Sometimes a new branch will start where the leaf was removed/fell off. The likelihood of that happening varies depending on the type of succulent, perhaps depending on the time of year, and on other factors also.

(Please don't begin pulling off leaves hoping for new branches....)
