OK, so, to get started, a quick rundown of the history of this planting: Any pesticide applications nearby? (I don't think that's any part of this but it must be asked), any differences in how the various plants have been maintained? Any insect populations noted? I am at least happy to report this is not viburnum leaf beetle, an emerging pest in some parts of N. America that could potentially make this fine shrub a poor choice in the future. Hey, I've planted arrowwood viburnums in the very recent past myself, so I still like using the plant.

I have used Round-up in a flowerbed nearby but not on these plants and not when it was windy. If it was Round-Up, would be strange that only these 2 are affected when they are on the opposite side of each other with the Red Feathers inbetween. But then I have seen stranger things happen.

Would also make it strange that rootings of this variety immediate start to act up as soon as leaves come up but rootings of the other types do not in the same spot of the ground.

There are some insect holes on leaves of the non-affected plants but not much on the ones that are dying (nothing is ever easy). From what I have read, the annoying Viburnum beetle hasn't made it to this area yet.

Well, that is strange. Nothing you wrote makes me think herbicide damage. Sound slike you are a carefull applicator, and besides, glyphosate injury would not present like this, I don't think. I guess at this point, you may have to dig deeply into the full range of possible pathogens of V. dentatum. I've got my giant book of the diseases of trees and shrubs right here, but there's a LOT of info to comb through, and time is short. But webland will get you to the same info. Good luck. I'd start by just typing in the symptoms into any good search engine, to get started. Terms such as leaf blight, leaf margins senescing...those kinds of things. Maybe look up "leaf scorch" in Viburnum dentatum as one possible entry.

Resurrecting the thread. bdot - did you ever figure this out? How did they do in 2017? Asking because I'm planting a couple of dentatums this spring and am also in the triangle.

I e-mailed the local extension office and they didn't know what it might be. Both of the Blue Muffin Viburnums died. The other 3 continue living. One was a Red Feathers. One was a generic. The other one was possibly Autumn Jazz but I can't remember for sure anymore. For some reason only the Blue Muffins decided to hate life.

Personally I love the Red Feathers variety better so I taking the limbs from the 1 I have and burying them in the dirt so they pop up in the spots where the Blue Muffins were located. These plants are very easy to root using the bury a limb method.
