What will grow behind the arbor vitae?

Hi, I have a large arbor vitae that provides a lot of privacy - but the bottom/back is dead. There was a skinny little rhody there when we moved in, but it was dead - my thought was that it was bigger and once filled the space - but there was a dog and most of the garden was dead...so. Now my gardener says our only option is to take out the existing tall shrub and plant a new one closer to the deck. It will be much smaller and take years to provide the privacy this one does. And it seems a shame to take out this otherwise happy shrub. But the "hole behind it is unsightly...Any idea of something I could plant there to fill the hole that will live with very little light (morning sun only).
