Pests on my Euky dwarf tree Please help!

The leaves on my Euky Dwarf tree have small mottled brown lesions and also small holes. The leaves eventually go dry and die off. The entire tree is affected. It's in a partly shaded spot -the upper part of the tree gets sun. It's about 3 metres high. The flower growth is a bit stunted too.
Is there anything I can do? I tried pyrethrum 6 months ago but it hasn't helped.I live in Sydney

Hi Jane. Is there any chance you could post a photo of your damaged plant? It's difficult to diagnose your plant's problem without seeing the damage.

Did you notice any tiny caterpillars on the leaves before they developed the mottled appearance?

Generally speaking Eucalypts recover from caterpillar infestations so if caterpillars are the cause of the mottled appearance then I'd recommend leaving well enough alone, sitting back with your favorite coffee & waiting for the recovery.

In fact, caterpillars are the favorite food of Australia's cuckoos so if your lucky to have sufficient natural habitat to attract a cuckoo or two then you'll have a real bonus in your garden.

The less toxins we have in the environment the healthier we'll be so I recommend you keep the spray kit under lock & key.

I doubt that the part shade location is a factor.

Thanks! I always thought aphids were white or light green (what I see on my veggies from time to time)so I never considered them as a possibilty here. Would spraying them off with a hose be acceptable to rubbing them off? Even with gloves on, I know I'll be "feeling" them all over for days....

You can transfer your plant anytime but make sure you are careful not to damage the root hairs that's where the plant absorb nutrients. The way I do it I get me a long knife and stick it going around the pot to loosen the plant from the pot. I invert the pot and get the plant out or if I have that black plastic pot I just cut it in 3 places to get the plant out. Then I get a pot size next bigger put some good soil- well draining be sure 1/3 perlite, 1/3 pine bark 1/3 top soil and add osmocote fertilizer or steer manure mix it well add it to the pot a third full and put in your plant. Now flood the pot with Warm water I mean soak the soil so no air is trapped inside. Then put your plant in diffused sunlight for 2 to 3 days and you are good to go. Water again when the next top 2 inches is dry.

Two young, thin branches and the weight of the leaves is pulling them down? Maybe the colourbond fence generated more heat and light than normal causing the tree to become a bit spindly. You could try cutting off the thinest branch (on the left) and staking and tieing the other as a leader. Be careful not to break the remaining branch when tieing it.

Thanks for your reply Woko - I've uploaded a couple of photos showing the lesions and damage to the leaves. Any ideas what it could be? Thanks Jane.

Excellent photos, Jane.

I notice in the first photo two white spots which look like lerps which are sugary caps protecting the larvae of psyllid bugs underneath. This makes me wonder if the holes have been made by the penetrating bills of lorikeets feeding on the lerps. The mottled appearance of your leaves may be the psyllids feeding on the leaves.

Have you noticed lorikeets visiting your plant?
