Wall sconce size?

I'm planning a Reno that will have a wall about 30" wide to the left of a kitchen peninsula. I want to put a walk sconce there. What width should I look for - is is similar to the rule for cabinet pulls which should be 1/3 of the drawer width?

A photo of the wall and sconce would help, but for a 30" wall, I might treat the sconce like an art piece and go large. I have a 16" square pottery wall hanging in such a space.

Unfortunetely, the house is 4 hours away and the wall in question is still a full wall, not cut back to allow for a pennisula as we plan to do. I did find a 12" wide sconce I liked here - Progress Lighting, but suggestions are welcome! Its a traditional space (brick rancher) and I'm planning an Ikea Bodbyn kitchen.

Your best size is probably 16 to 18 inches. There are about a billion of those online. Restoration Hardware has some excellent choices, well priced, and in multiple finishes. So too does Pottery Barn.RH and PB below at 16/17 inches respectively

I think you want the ability to brightly illuminate the space without having lights shining into your eyes. An overhead can light makes for really unflattering and uncomfortable lighting over a sink. They are fine in the shower. My personal preference is for a bar over the sink that bounces 70-80% of its light off the ceiling for a bright but more diffuse effect, switched separately from the sconces so you don't get the Millennium Falcon effect when you get up in the night and turn the light on.

The important distance to consider is the distance between the center of the vanity to the center of one sink. That distance never changes regardless of the size of the mirror. The wider the mirror, the less distance you have between the sconce and the mirror. If my calculation is right based on the measurements you gave, that distance is 21" (please confirm it as I don't explicitly see it on the measurements you gave us). The distance between the edge of the sconce and the edge of the 24" mirror is 6.25". This number came from that calculation: 21" -2.75" (half the width of the sconce) - 12 (half the width of a 24" wide mirror) = 6.25". Now if you use a 36" mirror, the distance between the edge of the sconce to the edge of the mirror would be .25" ( 21" - 2.75 - 18"). You don't want a quarter in. wall between the sconce and the mirror. If you were to find a 28" wide mirror, that distance would be 4.25" ( 21" - 2.75 - 14"). I think the width of the sconce is more in proportion with a 24" mirror. I also think a 24" mirror looks nicer with a 27.5 wide cabinet below it.

First thing is to make sure that your sconce is not too large. No one wants to hit their heads on the bottom of the fixture. I would not go much larger than what is hanging there.

I can't help with size without a pic :-) but wondered if you considered having a linen shade in the kitchen? It's a cool sconce, but I think I'd want something more easily cleaned (unless you don't really cook in your kitchen or it's far removed from food prep and there's no frying going on!

Oluchick - the wall sconce will be on the living room side, not inside the kitchen. I agree the linen shade would be a bad idea in the kitchen, LOL!

We're actually thinking of what light to control from the switch by the entry door in the living area. Right now it controls a lamp receptacle. which is PITA. So we thought having a wall light tied to the switch would be better. And I have this 30" wall to deal with, so....
