Picking and Curing Onions
Comments (2)I don't normally dig the onions until Sept, though I will start withholding water in Aug. when they start to fall over so the soil dries out. When digging, I will twist off the tops whether green or dry, and rub off any dirt or loose skins. Then spread on old window screens in the shop, or even a sheet of plywood if the screens aren't around and let them dry for a week or two. Once dry, remove the really loose skins again and put into net bags like grapefruit come in and store in a cool, dry place. Onions tend to start going bad for me by Feb-Mar if they are stored in a place with quite a bit of humidity, though....See MoreDo you really cure onions on the ground for a week?!?!
Comments (12)I'm in my 3rd year growing onions in larger quantities. First year, I harvested and cured them on the floor of my shop with what I thought was good ventilation and cool temps from fear of sunburning them if let outside, I lost almost half to rot. Last year, pulled and cured like Michael by covering with the tops out in the garden and didn't lose a single one. I finally chopped the last 10 lbs last month and froze them as this year's crop was starting and the stored onions were sprouting. I've got about 600 in the ground and stopped watering 2 varieties yesterday. They'll come out of the ground this weekend and I'll cure them in the garden for a week or so before storing. Good luck Doug...See MoreCuring onions in high humidity weather
Comments (5)Probably yes if you are not able to keep them out of direct sun rather than under the transparent plastic. I have cured mine both hanging from the floor joists in my basement and from the rafters of my shed. I prefer the shed for curing and the hanging in the basement for long term storage. Either curing method will take about 4 weeks minimum but you can still use them at any time during curing....See MoreNew wood floors needs to cure before fixing swirls/marks in finish?
Comments (6)I guess I would ask them what their idea of a "fix" would be for your flooring. Have they even been back out to look at the areas of concern? If it needs to be resanded and finished, then I would think they could do it sooner than the 60-90 days. I would be suspicious in having to wait that long. Are they hoping that as time moves on, you'll be less likely to want to live through the chaos again and accept it "as is"?...See Morefbx22
