Do you really cure onions on the ground for a week?!?!

This is my second year growing onions and in the first year I had great success harvesting them and curing them inside in a warm room (an un-airconditioned sun room). But everything I've read says you should harvest them and leave them on the ground in the garden for at least a week.

Is this better than what I'm doing?

Is there any risk? Critters? Rain? etc?

I guess I'm just nervous in leaving my crop out there unprotected.

Thanks,

Bart
