Shade Tree Suggestions

So both Valley Forge Elms I planted for my Mom a few years ago have been badly damaged or destroyed in recent storms. These seem to be weak trees with a floppy growth habit. I wouldn't recommend them, but I digress.

So, time to find some suitable replacements. I'd like two again, and given the width of the yard, it would probably be prudent to get something that doesn't get ridiculously wide. That rules out Oaks, for example. Something that grows reasonably fast would be a plus too.

Right now, I'm leaning toward a good old fashioned American Basswood or one of the cultivars. Does anyone have any thoughts on said cultivars. American Sentry is one that looks promising.

Also, would it be best to plant this fall or wait until next spring? I'm leaning toward spring right now unless there's a great benefit to doing it this fall.

FWIW, this is about an hour southwest of the twin cities. Full sun, good soil.

TIA!
