Difficult to read document

"Back in the old days", lol....maybe late 90's, there was a way to fine tune a page so to make it more read able...don't know if there is still a trick to do that. I can't remember what it was but in doing genealogy research, some documents were a little fuzzy. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

The documents may have been copied at a low resolution and could be displaying as sharp as you can get them. The only thing I can think of is to copy the image as a file to your computer, bring it up in a photo editing program, and see if you can improve the readability with the contrast or sharpness tools.

Cleartype maybe? If so, you can click "Start" and type "cleartype". It looks like this in 10...

Clicking "Adjust ClearType Text" brings up the "ClearType Text Tuner"...

I found out to email the Notepad document: On the Notepad document, hit the Select All button which highlights it, then the Copy, then open your email and hit Paste and there it is! Not complicated, but so difficult to get answers to simple questions!

Spacing off on WORD document

I have been working at finding away to change the default font on all documents since this thread started. No matter what I clicked on the starter version came up so I thought that might be my problem. I finally uninstalled MS Office Starter and MS Office Student and Home, then just reinstalled the student and home. I still could not get the font style to stay at what I set it. I thought about what was said about the 2003 version and opened a blank page, set the font and single space, went to file and chose "save as". A menu came up and I chose to saveto my desktop as MS Word 97-2003 Template (.dot) and made a shortcut, so far it has held. In case some else is still having this problem I am posting my results. None of the other ways worked for me, a new document always came up with Office's default settings.

Protecting a document

You can do this from right within Word. Within your document do the following: - go to Tools - click on Protect Document - a menu will come up with 3 option. click on Forms - You'll have to enter a password, click ok, then re-enter the password again. Now if you want to edit the document, you'll have to "unprotect" the document by doing: - Click on Tools - Click on Unprotect - Enter the password Now you can edit. Remember if you forget the password, there's no way of being about to edit the document. I use the protect feature all the time, and I keep the same password on every document so that I am never second guessing what password goes to what document.

Cleartype is a font display technology relating to individual screen characters, not a screen resolution sharpener. If the OP is looking at an image of the document, Cleartype won't have any effect.

Oh, I see. I didn't realize these were images of documents. :-)

That's just my assumption since the OP is doing online genealogical research. I suspect that the documents in question are scanned images....

Also if you have W10 we now have the reading view option which is very nice! or you can always zoom to larger pg. and print.
