Need urgent help choosing material for thin countertop

Been looking everywhere for the right material for a thin countertop. Started with corian, but it looks too plastic... dekton, we couldnt find a fabricator in Toronto who has done a thin countertop... and then we looked at Neolith, but read this thread: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2430019/has-anyone-used-neolith-for-countertops-or-been-tempted-to

Help!! What material should we choose?!

Cevemal; An appreciable fraction of natural stones have matting and resin on the backside of the stone to reduce the risk of cracks during shipment. Additionally, there are a number of natural stones that, when polished, have miniscule surface depressions too small to feel with a fingertip but visible when the lighting and viewing angle are correct. To make the stones more attractive to the market a process was developed where a VERY thin layer (.060") of resin is impregnated into the top surface of the unpolished slab using heat and vacuum. When the slab is then polished the surface irregularities are filled by the resin so the stone has the preferred glassy smooth finish. This process has the additional advantage of making typical sealing of natural stone unnecessary since the pores in the stone are filled by the resin. Regarding solid surface vs. natural vs. engineered stone all are good looking and durable countertop materials. Make sure you understand the different material properties and then pick the look you want with material properties appropriate for your application.

Every choice has pluses and minuses, in the end you have to choose which plus and which minus matters the most to you and/or which have an easy fix (like using a cutting board under the crockpot; at work we have an extra piece under the big coffeemaker). budget mattered a lot to me (and I hated formica) so, I ended up with a lesser expensive granite and am very happy, no sealing or extra work for the stone I chose. I had formica previously which looked like h#*! from the day I moved in and didn't get better (except that I could use bleach to remove stains) so those of you whose formica looks like new after 30 years must be taking appropriate care -- using cutting boards (mine had little cuts all over) and so forth -- where my previous owners did not. But, I read that formica now is much better quality than what was installed 30 or 40 years ago. I looked at Burled Beach and liked it. It looked a warm sand-ish color on my samples in my house, but I saw a demo kitchen of it at a big box store and it was a warm greenish tone (I still liked it) under their fluorescent lights. You always have to ability to STOP and make changes unless the cabinets are all already made. If he is just now starting it might not be too late -- call him now! PS do you have an IKEA near to you? Most counter materials are less expensive there.

Quartzite doesn't etch. If a "quartzite" etches, it is mislabeled and is really marble. (This happens a lot with super white which is usually mislabeled quartzite but is usually really dolomite marble.). Check out the countertop geology threads here where a geologist explains how to test slabs so you know whether you are getting marble or quartzite. You can seal marble to prevent stains, but you will still have etching. (I think there are some expensive processes now that claim to prevent etching, but I don't know if they really work and I remember people here who had seen them saying those resulted in the marble looking plastic). We had honed marble in our last house and I loved it, but it was an old house and I love antiques and patina. It is not for everyone. If you like the quartzite and it is really quartzite and you can afford it, I would go with that. It's hard to see colors correctly on screens so we can't really help much with whether the quartzite looks good with your other colors.

Sorry TCB - just realized you are the OP :) - and just re read that you plan to change the hardware....are you doing this everywhere in the home? Will the ORB be on all door hardware throughout the home? I'd strongly suggest focusing on the tile (white with matching grout or subtlety darker grout like a bone white). Then do the hardware and select paint LAST. Thank you for the paint tone pictures with your floor - could you retake the shots with the paint samples propped vertically against the wall by the tile floor. Look at all samples as you will see them in real life because the light hits them different so anything vertical (like paint) should be evaluated vertically.

So what's the difference between Neolith and Montgranite? Both are porcelain slabs that need someone trained to cut it.

Personally I'd call The Size (the producers of Neolith) and find out who in your area is trained to fabricate it. Then check their work.

There is nothing to doing a thin Dekton countertop. You just cut it and polish the edge without any buildup. It takes less experience than a built-up edge.

Iharpie, we are not looking for anything super thin. Just 12mm or so is good.

cpartist, we havent completely given up on Neolith yet. We plan to visit the showroom in Toronto today to ask them. But some of the experiences others have had with 'inexperienced' fabricators that are posted on this forum does not instill too much confidence!!

Joseph, but when we called the fabricators in Toronto up (those listed on Dekton website for Toronto), they were ALL hesitant on working on the 12mm slab. And of course, we read many horror stories online about how fabricator cracks the slab around the sink, etc.

As mentioned, I'd call The Size and ask them who they recommend. I'd also see if the showrooms have examples of it done and then you can ask them who the fabricators were.

Weird - I was thinking like Joseph - if you can do a 2 cm dekton it doesn't seem any different to do a 12 mm dekton, but what do I know? Definitely wouldn't go with anyone that was hesitant to take the job!

Thanks everyone for your help!

What about doing an upside down bevel pencil edge? How would that look? Has anyone done any that can share a picture?

We spent another week calling and looking around. We found a couple of places that would do thin countertops. But all these places charges more than double the regular ceasarstone prices!
