Self cleaning oven method super rusted my CI dutch oven!
Comments (17)Well, taking a second look, even though there was mucho rust after using the self-clean oven approach, I saw a lot of gray underneath - a good sign. So, after watching a few You-tubes on the subject - I rinsed out the pot with hot water - thoroughly dried with cloth and over gas burner, put on American Idol, and tackled it with absorbent cloths, oil, shortening and salt. I just kept cleaning and cleaning - never got it quite all off, but finally applied the recommended grapeseed oil and let it preheat in a 400 degree oven. Got engrossed in Idol - so it probably stayed in the oven for an hour. Happily, the grapeseed oil sealed it up quite solidly - and the cloth wiped over it comes out perfectly clean! The pan bottom almost matches the lid again (which had not been affected). I will do another couple of cycles of oiling and preheating. (Will post my phone photos if and when I can find the proper cable to upload.) Thanks to each of you for the input....See MoreCleaning a Self-Cleaning oven safely?
Comments (15)I too have a self-cleaning oven feature that I've never used (on this current oven, that is), because I've got a parrot andf they really can be killed by things that don't affect other pets (like non-stick cookware coatings) - there's a very good reason canaries were used as mine safety checks prior to environmental samplers, birds are highly susceptible to gases that mammals don't detect. What I do is a hot soapy water dampened towel to soak off baked on gunk and then a green scrubby, or the Method bathroom scrub (well rinsed off before cooking in the oven again.) That said, I think the cat would be okay - I never had a problem using self-cleaning before getting the parrot, and I've always had cats and dogs. My 20 year old siamese has been through several oven cleaning cycles in her life, and she always just vacated the room until the smell dispersed....See Morehow to clean oven WITHOUT using self cleaning function?
Comments (10)aocat--it's probably similar to the lemon/water recipe for cleaning the microwave. I use 3 1/2 cups water + 1/2 cup lemon juice in a 2 cup measuring cup. Place in microwave and run it on high for 3-5 minutes. Leave door closed for another 3-5 minutes after. Then open the door and wipe everything down. The steam generated from the water & lemon juice softens any dried on debris and it wipes right off. In the oven, I would think you'd put the water/lemon juice mixture in a glass oven-safe baking dish and turn the oven on until the water gets hot & it steams up a bit--if you have a proof setting, that may work as well. Turn the oven off and allow it to sit with the door closed for ~5-10 minutes, then wipe clean. If you have a microwave, I would think it would work just as well (and save electricity) to get the water/lemon juice mixture hot in the microwave first, then place it in the oven. While you're waiting on the oven, you could wipe the microwave down. Hope this helps!...See Moreaqua lift self clean-not self clean
