This Weeks Standout Plant In Your Garden 7/16
Comments (33)Not as exotic as many postings, but I have to say that this rudbeckia variety ("Indian Summer"), in its second year in the garden, has proved to be a real workhorse -- it's been blooming with big, 4-6" diameter blossoms for a full month now, and shows no sign of slowing down. (You can tell a little of its size -- both bloom and height -- by the shasta daisies behind it.) The blooms last for weeks on the plant (I've only deadheaded one blossom since it started blooming in early June -- what you see here have been open for weeks.) Wasn't sure, when I bought it last year, whether it would behave as a perennial or an annual (advice differed) -- but it came back beautifully this spring and is a joy....See MoreSuch Awful, Cramped, Uncomfortable Planes These Days: A Rant!!!
Comments (93)The airlines don't care about your comfort. Although you think you are purchasing a SEAT, you are not. You are purchasing the transportation from point A to point B. The reason why airlines don't have policies regarding obese people is because obese people have money too. Where will it end? Who will be the next pariah to ban? I have experienced many uncomfortable situations on an airplane that I could have very well complained about. Like the guy next to me picking his boogers and rubbing them on his pants. Like the tall guy in front of me who reclined his seat all the way and picked at the scabs on his bald head the entire time. Like the family with a screaming, kicking child behind me. Like the guy next to me watching porn on his Ipad. Like the lady next to me who's perfume application made me nauseous. Or the person somewhere on the plane with such bad body odor the entire plane stunk. If I purchase a seat, I shouldn't have to be subjected to any of these things that make me uncomfortable, right? But, whether you like it or not, we are all subjected to a social contract. We all have to put up with each others failings and that just so happens to make us uncomfortable on occasion. Of course it's not fair and makes us angry. That's a normal, natural feelings. But let me say again - how about a little compassion? How about a little less disgust for our fellow human beings? On another note, thanks Terriks. Louis CK is my favorite comedian!...See MoreBest and worst of your kitchen?
Comments (30)We remodeled our kitchen three years ago and I love everything about it. It's not perfect because I had to work within the footprint I had but I did a pretty good job designing a new one if I must say so myself. It's hard to pick out a best thing but if I had to, I would probably say the refrigerator drawers. We had to put in a counter-depth French door refrigerator and the only place for it was on the other side of the island...not too convenient. I countered that little piece of inconvenience by putting in refrigerated drawers on the island. I keep all the fruits and veggies in the top drawer and drinks in the bottom. Everything that requires food prep is right at my fingertips. If I had to pick out a worst thing, it would probably be the island outlet. Because of all the drawers in the island, the only place to put the outlet was on the back side of the island. It would have been more convenient on the side but it wouldn't fit. It's only a problem when I use my Kitchen Aid mixer, requiring me to walk around and plug it in. Not such a terrible thing since I don't use the mixer that often anymore. I went from a U-shaped kitchen with a peninsula cook top to a center island with six feet of pure work space. I love, love, love it!...See MoreWe apparently have the worst timing
Comments (16)Kelsey - I second Sophie's comment. :) I've had 2 homes built for me. The entire home-building process is thinly controlled chaos. Ha ha. I can all but guarantee this isn't the worst that will go wrong. Hope for the best (maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones and have nothing but smooth sailing from here!) - but plan for the worst (stuff breaks, goes wrong, takes longer, and costs a lot more than you ever hoped) - it's the nature of the beast when building something as complicated as a house. If you want to really give yourself a heart attack, you ought to ask people to start talking about what's the worst that happened when they built their house. Imagine how bad this could have been if your home was almost done and a whole bunch of trees came down on the actual HOUSE! Eek!...See Morehillyhouse C
