Need Suggestions on Exterior Colors of 1911 House
Comments (11)In 1910, shingle stain colors were very limited, like red, green, brown, and buff. I think Buff on the stucco, off-white for trim, and a green or red for the accent color. Your door being red in the pic, that would work. The shingled gables may look well in another color as long as it is not a deep value or a primary color. Something like a slightly darker shade of the stucco color. I'd recommend staying away from the outlining effect in a dark color of the trims, it makes an already-small structure look more cut up (busy is a word I hate to use, but it fits in this instance, meaning visual clutter) Casey...See MoreNeed suggestions to improve exterior of house
Comments (4)Your house, a mid-century ranch, has once again become a very desireable and fashionable style. It wouldn't take much to spruce yours up and make it look fresh. The first thing I'd think about is paint. The all-white look makes your house appear boring and a bit dead. Some colour would definitely give your house a lift. Why not think about a warm grey shade, or perhaps an adobe colour for the main body of the house with a very dark brown on the roof trim. Those colours would work well with the brick and add some definition. The dark paint along the roof would play up the roof angles and add some linear definition. The brick veneer is in keeping with the style of the house, and also appropriate to its period. I'd think carefully before deciding to remove it. The metal framed windows, while lacking much character or depth, are also appropriate to the house. If you need to replace them, I'd look for similar metal-framed windows in either a horizontal sliding configuration or casements. Vinyl windows aren't really appropriate to the style or period of the house. The next thing I'd do is work on the landscaping. Get rid of the tall jungle at the front. You really want to accentuate the horizontal. Low-growing swaths of shrubs and ground cover with a strategically placed multi-trunked tree or small grouping of trees (think palms, perhaps -- or something else with interesting branching) to provide a pleasant asymetrical balance might be good. While the circular drive was probably fashionable at the time your house was built, they are no longer in vogue. I'd think about jack-hammering it up and replacing it with a simple drive (perhaps exposed aggregate concrete) to the garage and some sort of landscaping. Play up the mid-century styling of your house. Don't try to change it to something it's not. Simple clean lines are the key. You might want to look for a few books specializing in this genre of house. There are a number out there. Your house has a strong resemblance to the Eichler style. There quite a few books on Eichler homes. You might also want to look at the link below for book available from Amazon on Ranch houses. You may find inspiration amongst its pages. Comments (2)Welcome to Kitchens. This seems like a huge project, and everything is spread out--bedrooms on every side, dining areas on opposite sides of the kitchen. I'd like to see the walk-in pantry where the pool bath is currently located--closer to where groceries will be brought in, and closer to the fridge. I put the pool bath just inside the garage entry, and rearranged the closet for that bedroom, which makes the middle room smaller. Also changed doors to the porch--one for access to the pool bath, and another for access to the hallway to kitchen. The laundry is larger and combined with a closet and bench, to double as a mudroom. In the kitchen I switched the DW to the right side of the sink, so that you can prep on the left side, across from the cooktop. A second option would be to put the clean-up zone on the wall to the right, and put a prep sink in the island. I included a pass-through from the formal dining room to the optional clean-up zone, with a stub wall to hide the dish mess from the LR:...See MoreNeed suggestions updating the exterior of my 80’s home.
Comments (6)Although it doesn't show well in the photo, I get the impression the railing on your porch is way oversized. And the hedge below it needs to go. Painting all the vertical corner trim on your house white is boxing it in. It stops the eye and squares up all the different parts of your home's facade. I would also eliminate some of the white below the 2nd story windows and above the garage door. You could use some lanterns flanking the garage and front doors. They should be 1/3 the height of the front door in all locations. Have a professional limb up the tree. It is pretty but is overtaking your home's curb appeal. Can you get better pix of the porch and front door for us?...See MoreMJ MJ
