Need help updating exterior of 80s home
Comments (5)I agree that painting your stone is not going to give you an updated look. I would either embrace it or remove it entirely. Your greatest impact is going to be in painting the stucco and trim, front door and garage door. All of those except front the front door should be the same color. I would recommend picking a warm gray or taupe color out of the stone. This will both downplay your stone and bring the house into a more contemporary pallet. For your front door I would consider a dark rich color. As K Lawrence said, go big with the light over the front door; perhaps something with simple lines on a bracket. As far as painting the brick, I like your brick, and would try fixing the color of the stucco and trim first and see what you think. But this is also a house that wouldn't look bad with the stucco, trim, and brick all painted the same color....See MoreLooking for ideas to update/remodel 80's home exterior
Comments (15)You've got shakes and brick on the front and, what appears to be, vinyl along the side. Was the house built like this in the 1980's? If so, then just paint it all one color. Or remove the front brick and shingle and re-side. Or just re-side the whole thing in fiberboard if your budget allows. If you want to play with the roofline, then that's going to require some input from a professional (like an architect). I think painting it all one color is the answer. However, I am reading a book on Bungalows and Craftsman homes and they painted the upper and lower floors different colors specifically to make the homes appear lower and wider. So maybe that's an option--but you don't have a visual divider between the 2 floors on the sides so, again, I would just go with all one color. You don't need to make it look less like a dutch colonial, you just need it to look like the prettiest Dutch Colonial. You need nice landscaping....See MoreUpdate to my 80s Schizo Exterior
Comments (4)I think I would do a metal casing around the posts the same as the trim around the door. I have to say I do not love the gray but if you do thats all that matters. You need to not add another finish to the posts so pic whatever is already there somewhere if not the metal. IMO they need to be about 8" square. BTW I love the house . I hope all the back is the same color siding as the front. I am so glad you did not paint the brick that would have ruined this really cool house. Now you need some landscaping to add the right touch....See More80's contemporary needs budget-friendly exterior update
Comments (20)Yes, the plants are a constant work in progress with the shade and the sloped yard and deer that devour everything. Once we got the pachysandra growing densely that helped. Deer don't touch the boxwoods. We have rhododendrons, but they are high since the deer trimmed off all the lower growth. We had some rot, but the painters brought a carpenter who replaced all the bad boards. We've also had to do control for wasps and ants. Keep ahead of the bugs. Figured out we had insects when the woodpecker started on the siding! When budget allows a more contemporary front door would be nice, plus change the light fixtures, and stucco the chimney....See MoreHU-489615411
